i have a 93 7.3 idi that i just put another used injector pump on. i have bled the lines, checked to see if fuel is coming out of the lines but still it will not start. i have tried starter fluid a couple times (which i know too much of will lock the motor up), and it will start for a spit second or a second and imediatly die. i have put new glow plugs, and a new glow plug relay. also, i have heard from several people that the injector pump DOES NOT need to be timed. is this true? PLEASE HELP!
I don't see any coming out of the tail pipe. But it does slowly creep out of the top of the motor at the intake manifold (I took the air filter off) when it does crank up for that spit second... it pours white smoke. And how do you time the ip pump?
You know not to use starting fluid without disabling the glow plugs, right? Starting fluid with hot glow plugs often results in blown head gaskets, perforated pistons, and bent rods.
Assuming you didn't take off the gear cover & move the gear, then you should find a timing marks on the pump and the gear cover where they meet. With the engine off, move the pump to align the marks. This should be close enough to get it started.
