I have this 93 diesel that still isnt wanting to start properly. i replaced injector pump injectors and glow plugs and can get it to start but it has to turn over at least 10 secs. with foot to the floor before it will go when warm. Cold starts it wont go at all without a lil startin fluid. is there a timing issue with the injector pumps i am not realizing.. this site has been great for me so far with lots of knowlegdable people helping me out.... anything will help as i still am no all that familiar with diesels.....Thanks
When you replaced the injection pump did you remove the timing gear/oil filler housing....with the IP.
Are your glow plugs working..... how long does the Wait to Start light stay on. Do you attempt the start as soon as the light goes off and the clicking of the controller starts. Do you turn off the ignition after each failed attempt and turn it back on for the correct start sequence each new start......
When it does run what color is any smoke.....black or white.... Are the wires on the IP in the right locations.......
Hey PLC7.3 i did pull the timing gear when i replaced the injection pump but i ended putting the old injection pump back on i dont know what the problem was and as far as the glow plugs go it has a push button cycling system it was on there when i bought it from the guy two weeks ago so i am not really sure how that works yet. i have been turning it on for about 30 secs. then turning it over(that is what the guy told me to do) but i am not sure if that is correct or not. as far as the smoke goes it is black almost like dyed fuel is being run but i assure you it is straight #2. and the wires i believe are (towards the front is a double red or pinkish wire) (and the rear is a single yellow wire.)

at the moment i am at work and dont have my manual here.maybe someone here might be able to link a pic for you.there are marks on the cam gear and th inj pump gear that have to line up,just like tdc on a gas eng.i just did my head gaskets but didnt take out pump gear.
Problem is, the timing mark on the cam gear is painted on. Once you pull the housing and pump off, you have to clean the crap out of the gear and look for a white paint mark on the face of the cam gear. You need lots of light and maybe a mirror to find it. The pump gear has a "v" mark if I remember correctly which lines up with the paint mark.
hey spikebee i cant seem to find the lil white mark on it maybe i am using the wrong tools i am using a lil telescoping mirror and a two million candlepower spotlight. got any ideas on an easier way to find it
Hopefully, nobody has had the gear out and taken the paint mark off! Try turning the engine over really slowly and look for anything that looks like it could be a stain or something. It should look like somebody took one swipe with a paintbrush across two teeth on the cam gear. Usually theres some evidence of paint in between those two teeth as well. Biggest problem is it's white paint and so it's hard to see. The "v" on the pump gear would go in between those two teeth. The only other way to set it if the paint is gone is to take the front cover off and that's a nasty job.
Oh, and next time you have to mess with the pump, take the little two bolt plate off of the front of the cover, then remove the three 8 point 5/16 bolts, then take the three nuts off of the pump and pull it off. The pump has an alignment pin on it.
Good luck with it! Brian
there is also a mark on the back side(firewall side) of that cam gear. i used a bent paper clip, and turned the motor over by hand. you can feel the mark with the paper clip. that way you don't have to pull the whole front of the motor off
