2000 F250 7.3 SD 4x4 SC long bed.....looking at going from 265/75R/16E to 285/75R/16E on the stock rims.
Currently tow/haul nothing....may get a small slide in to haul around and possible tow a car trailer once in a blue moon.....also in Fl. where there are no hills.
Read many searched posts and only found a couple referring to the issues of tranny shift points. Is it necessary to have the computer flashed to change the tire size with this small change?
My truck's speedo is almost dead on with the 285's on it now. Other thing it now does it that it doesn't shift into fourth gear to about 46-47 mph which I like...
I have four different rigs and am not sure if any have the "correct" size tires other than my SD, it is dead on with stock tires. In Cal, and I assume most states, there are mile posts at .5 to 1 mi intervals depending which direction you are traveling. Just check from there - they are surveyed to within about ~6" unless they are in an intersection or some other obstruction. Can't get much closer than that.

285's are on mine and no rubbing at all with stock Ford mud flaps. Although I'm thinking of upgrading to a 305 or 315 tire with new rims the 285 is a nice size tire where you won't lose to much fuel economy but fill your wheel wells a little more. Go for it.
No issue with rubbing with 285's for me either. My 315's though, I pulled back the inner fender liner, and spaced the front bumper to clear in all situations even with a 2.7" levelling kit.
