The O2 sensor will know if the cat is missing so the light will not go off. Either the cat is bad or the sensor is bad. (or wires to it) There are ways to trick the sensor tho.

I would see if the thinner trick works. Your vehicle still runs the same and still gets the same mpg, so you cat is not clogged and causing excessive backpressure. (You would be seriously down on power if clogged) If the thinner does not work, just figure out how to fool the sensor. (tuner maybe, perhaps someone has a serving suggestion on that)

I was thinking of doing the gotts mod. Cut out the cats install a homemade straight pipe and get some spark plug non foulers and an o2 bung and fab it up. Anyone recommend welding the o2 bung? Worried about warping the threads and not being able to install o2 sensor

V10 and 85e150 laid it out for you.

Of you do what you are talking about, it will freak out the computer. If you are planning on doing what you say, you will need to fool the computer, or live w/a CEL that is on. If'N I was you, I'd gut the cat and leave it in place and do what you need to fool the computer.

BTW, this is highly illegal in the US.

Whats not a ssimple is determining WHY the cat failed. If you simply replace the cat, without fixing the source of the problem, the new cat will fail again. Catalytic converters contain no moving parts and do not fail due to wear or mileage. They fail because they have been exposed to conditions outside what they were designed to handle.

Most often the cause for failure is either rich operation or excessive temperatures. Make sure the truck is properly tuned up. Don't assume it is tuned up because it runs well, instead look at the factory maintenance schedule and make sure that every item that is listed for your mileage is done.

Cutting the cat off and running a straight pipe means your light will stay on forever. This can mean that if another issue comes up, you won't know about it, and it will be able to cause engine damage before you realize that there is a problem. The CEL is there to let you know that something is wrong, and if its on all the time or is disabled, it cannot do what it was designed to do.

Again, your factory cat never should have failed, the fact that it has means your truck has some tune up items that have been neglected for far too long.
