Stupid but quick question, when installing an toggled electric fuel pump to only use as a primer when the need arises (mech lift pump is NOT being removed/deactivated) is it better to add a few Y's on the line to leave a non restricted line for the original lift pump to pull through or will the electric push style pump allow the lift pump to still be able do it's thing on a single line when it's not powered on?
Your lift pump will be able to pull through he electric pump if u put them in line. And ur electric will push fuel through the lift pump no problem. Just be aware if the lift pump diaphragm ruptures and you have the electric lift pump turned on it will quickley fill your crank case with diesel and can ruin your engine. For that reason most people will run one or the other, are you having air intrusion problems?
Thanks for the info, but like I said only use it to prime if needed, the LP will continue to handle fuel delivery duty by it's self any other time. And I was having air intrusion problems but I got that taken care of finally. I'm just doing it this way because after dealing with that crap for the better part of a month its more of a just in case deal.
I'll be damned if I ever repeat the crank till dead, recharge & repeat process I had to do every single day to get the truck started before I finally found the almost microscopic little crack in the IP feed line that was causing my problem. The LP currently on the truck still works just fine, and if it aint broke I dont fix it. Now if the LP ever takes a dump it's getting removed and I'm switching over to electric only.
Glad you got your air intrusion fixed, and no prob glad to help. I went all electric about a year and a half ago and wont go back. Filter changes will be much easier for you now too, I change my filters, electric pump on, wait about 2 min and she fires right up, no more cranking to purge all that air.
Just figured I would add as a follow up so it would show up in the search incase someone else had the same idea. I installed an Airtex E8090 and a Napa 3033 filter inbetween the FSV and the trans crossmember on the frame. Set it up on a push button beside my other push button for my GP's.
Got to test it out a couple times so far, once when repriming after installing it and when I ran my front tank out of fuel like a moron the other day. Only took about 15 seconds or so both times of on time and was back on my way. Even if you only install to use as a primer like I did I'd highly suggest this mod to everyone, sure makes life alot easier.
Less than $60 in parts and about 1 hour or so to install just takin your time.
I notice that filter says for gasoline only. What would be the adverse effects of using it for diesel? It says it has paper element.
Not saying something couldn't go wrong, but alot of the guys around here I know use it with diesel fuel on transfer / aux fuel tanks and as a single filter to stock for use on trucks / small equipment where there is both gas and diesel motors. The NAPA here doesn't keep the 3/8 inline diesel filters in stock and you have to wait for them to order one. But of course everyone failed to mention that last little bit of info and I needed my truck finished that day so I didn't have much choice.
With that being said, when filter change time comes around I'll pick up one of the 3/8 filters thats diesel rated and put it in instead. It's only been about 2 months since the install but I havn't had any problems so far, even with temps getting down into the single digits at night.
