Question Automatic tranny failure

Friday on the way to work my transmission stopped transmitting. It won't propel the truck forward or backward. I checked the fluid level with the engine running, and it's now way high on the dipstick; it had been right at the "full" line when warm about three weeks ago.

I assume that the main pump failed. I wonder if this AOD-E transmission leaves any OBD codes to read....

So, the only experience I have with rebuilding an automatic transmission was rebuilding a Chrysler Torque-Flyte back in high school auto shop. Is it reasonable to think that I can rebuild this transmission myself over the winter? Or is that just crazy talk?

You're jumping to conclusions. First figure out exactly what transmission you have, there were 4 different auto used in these trucks, two all mechanical the C6 and AOD, and two all electronically controlled the 4R70w and E4OD. You'll find the trans code on the calibration decal on the drivers door pillar, decode it here.. Ford Axle Code Chart .: Articles
Once you know what you got you can narrow down the possible causes for your problem, with the AOD the TV cable is critical and if it becomes disconnected could cause your symptoms, and several vehicle sensors like the TPS and VSS are critical for the electronic transmissions so if you have one of those the first step would be to pull the codes.

Yup, identifying the transmission and the problem are the first and second steps. I thought I'd ID'ed the transmission type when I bought the truck, but that was more than two years ago and my memory is notoriously porous. Also, I see that the AOD-E is a replacement for C4 and C5 transmissions, which wouldn't have been used on my 460, so I think you're right that I have an E4OD. I don't think it would have a 4R70W, since those were introduced after my truck was built. I'll check it again when the weather is better. (It's a dark and stormy night tonight, and tomorrow should be even stormier.)

I'll pull the codes and see what they say. I just realized that since I bought the truck I haven't had any reason to hook up a scanner to it, so I don't know if it has EEC or OBD-2. I've got readers for both, but it's testament to Ford reliability that this truck has needed only routine oil changes and tires since I bought it, oh, and the ball joint I also need to replace.

The only auto overdrive transmission used behind the 460 was the E4OD and it's completely computer controlled, and unless your truck is a Cali spec it's OBD-1 with the diagnostic connector under the hood.

Your truck is a 91 F250, right?

I had the tranny fail on my 93 F150 when I was about 700 miles from home. I had the slide-in camper on it at the time, so fix it right then was about my only option. Cost me just over $3,000.

The rebuilt unit started acting up on the way home. My local guys diagnosed a failed "range sensor" and replaced it. Been running good since.

I thought having a rough price might help you decide what to do with yours.

Good Luck!

That's a sobering number. $3000. Wow.

It sucks to break down away from home. In 1989 I drove down to Los Angeles to visit my dad before starting a new job. My MG Midget broke a half shaft at a stop sign on a hill. I was 1000 miles from home, but luckily my dad lived 10 minutes away, so that's where I had it towed. I ended up staying for three months, working temp jobs and saving up for parts. Ah, those were the days, when a little sports car was more important than a new job.

I remember from working on the Torque-Flyte in auto shop that cleanliness was the key, and lots of little baggies to put all the valves and seals so they could be reassembled. Oh, and zen-like peace of mind... that was key too.

Yup. $3000. It was at a Ford dealership, and carries a 3yr/36,000 mile warranty (which I had to use already to get that range sensor diagnosed and replaced).

My local independent mechanic said he would have been about $2000, but I was too far away; a tow was out of the question. And having the camper on it made it hard to think of other creative options like just buying another truck, or junking that truck and renting a vehicle.

Since you have done this work before, why not give it a go?
