I going to rent a bobcat soon they weigh about 6,000 lbs and the trailer weighs about 2,000 lbs thats 8,000 lbs total I have a 79 F100 wornout 302 C4 2.75 gears, yah I know but my buddy has a 79 E150 302 C6 3.25 gears and it has a reese hitch, he'll let me use it anytime but it doesn't have insurance he plans on fixing that soon and it has taillight probelms that need to be fixed. witch one?
My choice would be the E150 because:
C-6 is stronger then C-4
3.25 axle ratio is better than 2.75
E150 has a shorter distance from rear axle to hitch
E150 has a heavier GVW(springs) than F100
Tow the F150 or E150 with the Bobcat! Just kidding. I think they are both severely underpowered, mostly a result of the gear ratios. How far do you have to travel? If it's not far, use the E150 and be careful. If it's a fair distance, look into borrowing or renting another vehicle.
Find out if the equipment rental will deliver the Bobcat for you. Then spend your time enjoying a cup of coffee while the tractor is on it's way to you. Instead of a white knuckle ride you may never be able to forget. If the trailer has a pintle hook with a ball coupler adapter, it could be way over 2,000# anyway. Most of those construction equipment trailers are made for towing behind a dumptruck and they are a lot heavier than a car trailer.
Get the Bobcat delivered its cheaper in the long run and you don't have to worry about trying to pull a trailer with it on it and the rental shop doesn't have to worry either.
A 1/2 ton shouldn't be pulling a Bobcat its minimum 3/4 ton P/U a skid steer is heavy and weighs more than a 1/2 ton P/U truck does.
I responded to an accident once where a pick-up pulling a bobcat ran into the back of a semi. I don't know if he had trailer brakes, but my guess is not. The trailer was too heavy for the hitch and ripped it off the pick-up. Luckily, only minor injuies.
Last week for several hours one lane of I-80 through Lincoln was shut down because a guy was towing a Bobcat with a too small pickup. It got away from him and flipped the truck on its side . Totalled the truck and the Bobcat.
Have it delivered.
