Add 4bl carb, free flow exhaust, straight up cam gear and leave mother in law at home. should pull ok on flat land. You may want to calculate in stopping it all.
With the 435 you have low 1st to get that mess a rolling. Stopping would be my concern.
#2 on good condition vehicle brakes and elec brakes on the trailer, I would also put the majority of the bobcat weight centered over the axles on the trailer....your trailers front axle and tires will appreciate it.
All that fwd weight on the tongue can compress the rear suspension of the truck and raise/lighten the load weight off the front end, making it a little light on steering.
Head gasket went on the highway trying to make it up a hill. 3rd gear about 38mph was too much for the 351M. Don't have a tack but most likely 3500ish rpm, 4.10s in the axles.
460 swap here we come

My stock '78/400 has handled 6,500 lb w/o issue. With a 3/4 ton and 4.10's you are set up for a good towing PU. If you turn that 351m into a 400 with Tim Meyer upgraded parts you would have a great towing machine with fewer conversion hassles.

Sounds like a good idea, I 84 west has a few good hills, nothing like the hills in PA I-78 but it was enough. Most likely original engine it was going to happen at some point. I have the 460 w/ ZF5 I want the overdrive. 55mph in CT is dangerous
Oh man, that's too bad. It's probably an old gasket though? I mean, I had the same problem with my '79 300 I6... end of this past summer I was driving from sudbury to Cambridge (550 km's) and I have 2.73's, a 3 on the tree, and was towing/hauling approx. 3000 lbs. The engine was running really hot and ended up getting a small leak that showed up later in the week when the truck shut down from overheating due to lack of coolant. I'm also upgrading, but focusing on a different set of rear gears and a 5spd M5OD tranny.
old gasket much skinny pedal on , too many RPM. I screwed it up.... Firsof business is getting that bobcat working again. I picked it up from the shop on Saturday, called yesterday after it quit and there may be a bad connection at a fuse. I need to move this snow were getting up in CT woooooooooo
Ordered a set of trickflows heads for the 460. Putting a howards cam in the truck. Called the machinest and a tech at howards, it should make a great match for low RPM HP and TQ. I need to dial in the compression ratio before I pick a headgasket for it, but just bar napkin math shows between 8.3 and 9.7 depending on the piston height in the 460.
Saturday I went down to harbor freight and picked up a 2000# engine stand and will start tearing into the 460 to get it ready to bring to the machine shop.
All this typing is great now I just need to get out of work and start wrenching and of course taking lots of pictures. Bringing the block to PMR in Kensington CT
Engine at 2000 tonight. All looks so good so far. Lifters move freely push rods looked good . Tomorrow i spin it over pull the harmonic balancer timing cover and crank.
