I was thinking about what kind of stereo I would install into my truck whenever it gets closed to being finished. There is always the idea of putting it into the glove box. Cutting the dash is not an option.
Has anyone around here ever used one of the marine stereos in a truck?
I was thinking about this setup and mounting it below the bench seat.
And then you have to buy the wired remote. But it looks like you could epoxy a felt magnet onto the back of the remote and it stick to your dash, and be put away when you want it invisible.
I'm a huge fan of "digital media receivers". These usually don't have a CD player, they just play off USB flash drives or an iPod-type player. They also have a radio. With these you can mount them anywhere, in any orientation, without worrying about needing access to slide in a CD, and no worries about skipping or destruction of a CD drive from our trucks' rough ride. They usually have a wireless remote, so you need line-of-sight to use that, but it can be way under the dash. One without a CD player is only about 4" deep, and weighs about a pound, so it's easy to hide.
I got one off WalMart for $35 that (no real surprise) was a total POS, then got a Pioneer on sale that does have a CD player. It was only a $100 and it sounds and works great! I have an 8GB flash drive I use with it, has every song I've accumulated.
Here's the setup on one of our club member's truck...the head unit is under the seat and the controls neatly installed on the rear of the sun visor. This is not a special stereo, just a run of the mill unit with a detacable faceplate (I think they all come that way these days). There is a kit that you can buy that mounts the faceplate and has the interconnecting cabling. Clean setup and it doesn't eat up your glovebox...leave that task to Vintage Air!
