ok so the audio thread hasn't ever been too helpful so I'm asking you guys, makes a bit more sense to.
so someone already cut up my dash to put in a tape deck. I want a cd player and one of my friends is giving me one. now my question is does anyone know how to mount the darn thing? the tape deck was easy as the ***** work like bolts and it came with nuts and washers so it's attached straight to the front of the dash. the cd player won't work like that, it would need like a sleeve or something and I don't know how to do it. so please help!!!!
Some head units have a metal sleeve with spring tabs that grab the back of the dash. Then the unit slides and locks into that. Often the back of the unit will have stud or hole to attach a back brace also. Your kinda stuck make-shifting something if your friend doesn't have any of the mounting hardware. You'll need to cut the square hole the right size to fit the CD unit.
Personally, I'd weld the dash back up and use a portable mp3 or disk player hooked to a hidden amp. In fact, that's basically what I do. I've done all my stereo installs that way for years after getting too many units stolen right out the dash.
I agree, I have an mp3 player with built in radio. The plug comes from the amp and in between the folds of my bench seat. I just plug it in when I get in the vehicle and take it out with me..
just put the cd player in the glove box. If you look around they make really neat abs plastic mounting kits to mount a radio under the dash. Just flip it upside down and put it in the glove box. My friend did that with his old catalina convertible, and it is a wicked sweet install. Or just be hillbilly like me and just let it bounce around in the glove box
