Vacuum Pump No Worky, 2003 Excursion, Help!!!
Week or two ago, I noticed that the ESOF auto hubs weren't working in my 2003 Ex. Also had A/C vent issues - air only blowing out of the defrost vents. Posted about that here and figured I had a vacuum leak in/around the front hubs. This was my excuse to order and install some new Warn manual hubs.
Swapped out the hubs yesterday (easy job - took maybe 20 minutes) and now I still don't have vents working. Then realized that my vacuum pump wasn't coming on. Not sure what fuse it uses, so I pulled each fuse and checked it. All fuses were good.
Then I pulled the wire off the vacuum solenoid and checked it with my test light. There are three prongs/receptacles - I got power on the middle prong. Not sure if I'm supposed to have power at another one, but this indicated to me that I was at least getting power to the solenoid.
Next step was to replace the solenoid. Vents still no worky.
Any ideas? Bad vacuum pump? Don't want to replace any more parts until I have a good diagnosis.
Thanks,
Scott
it could be a dead pump.I don't have the diagram for your year and model.
I do for an 06 diesel on it there is a 4 pin plug and pin #4 is hot and #2 is
the ground. The other 2 don't do anything.
Here is what I would try. Pull the plug from the pump and then test each of
the pins to ground with a meter you should have one that is hot once you find
that one then check the others by placing one of your probes on the + of the battery
and looking for one that gives you a ground. Once you have that then check the two
to make sure that you have power when you turn the key on. If you don't then it
back in the truck wiring and if you do then most likely it a bad pump. If the pump
runs then you may still have a leak. Put a vac gauge on it and see what you have
and how long after power off it holds.

The vacuum pump does not come on at all; no noise, no vacuum, nothing.
I have power to the middle female receptacle on the plug. I'll see if I can check the others for a ground.

Took about 10 minutes for the install. Then turned the key and couldn't hear it pumping. (@#&*$(&*%!!! Then I listened a bit more and heard a humming noise. Sure enough, it's working. You could hear the old pump from 40' away, so the new one is quite a bit quieter.
Thanks,
Scott
