that's it.
you want to shoot for 36 to 38 total.
so: 36 - (stamped # x 2) = initial setting

Got it. Since you are being so helpful I have another question that's been bugging me. I was told by a mechanic once that they used to set their timing with a vacuum gauge. When I did this it ended up being set way too advanced. Ever heard of such a thing?

oh yeah, i'm familiar with that one.
there seem to be two schools of thought on setting the initial timing, and that's the other one.

my opinion: (i say that because you'll get others)
setting the initial timing via vacuum makes for a great idle.
the problem...this ignores the centrifugal advance completely.

unless you know what's happening UNDER the breaker plate, you could really put yourself in a bind.

for example:
lets say that using the vacuum gauge, you end up with 16 degrees initial.
but (like most everyone else), you have no idea what slot you're using.
turns out...its 18L.

so you've got 36 degrees centrifugal advance, and now you've just piled on 16 initial...for a total of...52!!! ouch. ping city.

example #2:
same as before, you set via the gauge and end up with 16.
again, you haven't checked the centrifugal advance.
its using the 10L slot.
16 + 20 = 36...perfect.

setting via vacuum is a total crapshoot...

Yes Sir! Problem fixed. I have been working on this off and on for some months and you nailed it. Dropped in the new dist., set it at 10 degrees and went for a drive. Runs great and now it starts when it is hot! That is new. Thanks for all your help.
