Knocking from engine at 1500 rpms?

So I got some knocking noise that becomes very apparent and loud over 1500 rpms.. So basically any time I get on a highway I hear it.

I'm about to drive a few thousand miles around the country, and wondering if I should fix this?

Bad injectors? I'd rather not pay the $70 to have em tested.

What is a good/cheap way to make sure the engine is healthy before driving several thousand miles?

Thanks>>

Well I'll try.

It is pretty rapid. Probably 4knocks/second around 1500rmp. Faster as the RPMS go up. It's dull sounding... not pingy or ringy.

If you loosen the injector lines one at a time while its running, you should be able to isolate the cylinder/injector thats causing the knocking. The one(or more) that causes the sound to change is where to start looking.

Could be a rod / main knock. Does the knock change as you accelerate / decelerate?

No i mean the pitch.. not does it get faster as the engine goes faster. So youre cruising at 1500 and you floor it, does it still knock? How bout if you let completely off?

I'll test drive it to see if it changes with the accel off.

I should mention.. I'm running WVO most of the time.. 236,000 miles... Lots of white smoke on startup and sometimes smokes when idling even when engine is hot.

Went for that test.

Knocking gets loud around 1500... Foot off the pedal, noise continues until engine slows to around 1200 then the noise fades into the background noise. If pushing the pedal above 1500, the noise gets louder and continues.

I might just be overly sensitive and making an issue out of nothing.

Change the oil and filter.....
Fill up with real diesel, not oil....

Report back with the good results. Its not good on these trucks to run oil for diesel year around

As far as a rod or main knock myne has a slight tick and gets faster as i increase the throttle too. It has done this for 25,000+ miles

I cracked each injector and fuel squirted out while running. From my understanding this doesn't necessarily mean the injector is good, right?

While in neutral, I pushed the rpms up to 1500 and white smoke started coming out.

Ideas?
