Last weekend I purchased a 1986 shortbed Lariat with a 302/auto trans. I had one in the 90's and wanted to have another sweet ride like this one. Just joined the forum and see that it has a bunch of active particpants. Would appreciate help with two questions that have me scrathing my head.
Question One - The air pump had a belt on it, but the large (1/2 inch maybe) port on the back of it doesn't have a hose on it. I think this provides air for the exhaust, but can't see where a hose would run to. Any clues?
Question Two - The dash water temp gauge doesn't work. I want to test out the water temp sensor (which looks new) which has two pins on it. One has a black wire connected and one has a green wire connected to it. Does one of these wires run to the temp gauge?
The water temp sensor with a two-pin connector (generally located on the radiator hose inlet) talks to the computer and has nothing to do with the dash gauge. On the 302, I believe the dash-gauge sender (one wire, either red/white or white/red, I forget) is on top of the intake manifold, RH side, don't remember if front or rear.
That's correct, the sensor for the gauge only has one wire.
I am not sure about the fuel injected engines, but the carbed engines had a port on each cylinder head right between the head and the firewall. A metal pipe connected to these ports, went into a y, and then a metal check valve, and then the hose hooked to that and went to the air pump.
EDIT: Here's a picture showing a carbed 302 that had the external pipes going to the exhaust manifolds. I am not sure which one the efi engines had. AutoZone.com Repair Guide Image. 4: Thermactor system on 302 V8 engine
