temp sender locations

I have a 1998 Ranger with a 4.0 OHV. I just got done with changing the intake manifold gaskets. I did the job over the past couple of weeks, and as I was putting things back together I found a single green/white wire with a right angle female bullet connector in the wiring harness. It is in the area of the fronn of the engine on the driver's side of the harness. For the life of me I can't remember seeing this when I took it apart, nor can I find where to connect it.

When I started it up (seems to run fine BTW), I get a check gauge dash light and the temp gauge stays cold. If I short the green/white wire to ground, the light goes out, and the gauge goes full hot.

Can anyone tell me where to connect this wire?

Look for a 'single post' sensor screwed into the intake or head or thermostat housing that would have contact access to the coolant. In most cases the post appears threaded and is made of brass. Size can vary, but it will have a hex head for installation and removal.
If you take the loose wire, and move it in an arc at its fully-extended length, you should be within the range of where the sensor is located, unless the harness is routed or plopped in place improperly.

On our pushrod 4.0L, look on the passenger side of where the Upper radiator hose attaches to the engine, for the dash single wire temp sender post.
The Two wire computer coolant temp sender is on the drivers side of where the upper radiator hose attaches.

Thanks Tom, I had already done exactly as you described, no luck. I have 2 sensors visible just back of the thermostat housing, but neither are the single post style of connector.

Mine has two senders in the manifold behind the hose attachment, but nither of those are the old style single wire posts. I will double check when I get home this evening.

Pawpaw, any chance you could take and post a photo of yours?

Thanks for the help guys!
