steering box help needed

hey guys
i have a 2001 ex with the 7.3. i also have an approximate 4 in liff. i just got done doing a bunch of work on the suspention, shocks, and steering. i replaced shocks on all 4 corners. replaced the pittman arm, drag link, control arm, tie rod ends and both hubs. also replaced the steering box.
problem: i took it to the local belle tire for an alignment and they said that it is tracking straight BUT the steering wheel turns 2.5 turns to the left and 1.5 to the right till the steering maxes out. the guy behind the counter claims that the only explanation is that i got a bad steering box from the factory. i was careful to lock the steering wheel down with the seat belt so i didnt get any shift from that.

has anyone else had any experience with this? is there anything else i need to be checking/fixing before removing the steering box again?

That is nasty.

Well, you can always take it back and get in on the Redhead steering box buy. That is if they still have your core.

Going to show my ignorance... any chance the steering box was not centered before putting on the Pitman arm?

I am just as inexperienced....

but this IS the symptom described in the "how to install your redhead steering box" if the pitman arm isn't put on the steering box with it centered.

Here is the link and a quote from post #6 which contains the pics and the step-by-step:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...installed.html
Installation:
Before beginning the installation make sure the steering box is centered

thanks for the replys....

the box had a couple little dots on the housing and the output shaft (i said shaft) from the factory to keep it aligned. further, i attached the pittman arm prior to the install. it may have come from the factory skewed. i guess either way it has to come off. i will recenter the wheels and see if the dots still line up.

i think im going for the red head anyway too.

it was one of those situations where you work on something for 3 days then you have to take a couple steps backwards.

Again showing ignorance... just sort of winging it here.

Can't one take the box, turn it to the left as far as it will travel. Then count the turns it takes to turn it as far right as it will go. Split the difference and that is center?
