My 3rd waterpump on my 7.3 is shot.
Original went 115,000 mi. replacement ford pump went 30,000mi. and replacement napa went 45,000 miles. There is no way that these engines should be doing this! Navistar or someone must have upgraded pumps because this is unacceptible. Any suggestions? Thanks
I believe I would seriously consider checking the balance/runout of the fan/clutch/pulley assembly.
You may have bent or damaged something during the first (somewhat normal mileage) replacement that is now continuing to eat pump bearings.
Check the pressure at which your "radiator" cap actually relieves. Higher coolant pressures may cause coolant to seep past the seal and "wash out" the bearing lubricant.
failed fan clutch maybe?....possibility that the fan clutch is running 20 or 30%+ engaged (not enough to roar but enough to be heard if listening for it) all time adding additional steass to the pump bearing?

Why do you feel that additional stress would be placed on the bearing?

I ponder that our fans are not precisely balanced....if they are locked a large amount of the time that imbalance may translate to osculating loads being placed on the water pump impeller shaft. ?
I know this is an old thread but I'm having the same issue. I am on my third water pump and on my drive home from work, I can hear squeaking from under the hood. As I suspected, the shaft on my water pump was shaking just like the second water pump I had. I can see that the fan clutch needing replacement also to be the logical reason I am replacing so many water pumps. My 7.3 has only 202k miles on it and it runs great.

I was in the same boat as you. I am on my 4th water pump replacement. Each time they were replaced I had some weepage from the seal and/or small drip when cold weather set in. The last one was an actual bearing failure, but not catastrophic. Thank goodness. I am running ELC, coolant filter, and have already replaced the cap, radiator (cracked neck) and degas bottle (crack). I decided to replace the fan clutch with the last water pump and have no signs of leaks for almost a year. I do feel the fan clutch may had been a big part of my earlier failures. So far, so good. Keeping my fingers crossed.
