First off thank you to howler4x4 for the great deal on the Timbrens, even if I don't use them it was a great deal.
AlaskanX you hit it on the head, you do not need a tank to plow snow. Before the Super Duties came out the most popular truck to plow snow with here in western NY was an F-150 shortbed. And we live in the land of lake effects snow blowing off of Lake Erie. You guys that keep saying not to do it or to get a snowblower have no clue what it is like to live downwind of Lake Erie during a Lake effects snow storm. During a good storm I may have to have my driveway plowed 3 times a day. And that same snow may blow around for a week drifting into my driveway.
Also my driveway is a U shape around 120 yds long. When the lake effect storms hit to often I end up with only half my driveway plowed which is why I want my own MAN sized truck to plow with.
But then again it could be like last year when my driveway didn't need plowed all Winter.
i hear you, my uncle lives outside buffalo and he said the lake effect crap is different. we got alot of snow but no wind and it doesn't melt so it just piles up all winter. right now with the small amount we have so far i'm trying to push my piles as far back as possible incase we break another record with 200+ inches of snow.
if we all had a bunch of money to blow on a plow truck i think we all would pick this f-250 PSD king ranch we did for a customer the other day.
this f-350 was nice also...9'2" VXT with wings...11 foot wide spread out!
a majority of our installs are on fords f-250,350,450,550 but i've done tundra's,titan's, Tahoe's,Ranger's, suburbans, a ford Econoline 350 Van with 4x4 conversion(total custom mount had to be fabbed) the list goes on...you can plow with anything and most of the time it will get the job done. i really like my old '91 f-250 though..she had been through decades of plowing and keeps asking for more.
good luck! get some super duty front springs and go for it. you'll be very happy.
we only get wet snow in fall/spring or if we get a temp rise close to the freezing mark. most of it is powder, light and fluffy. but i have pushed 3 foot of slushy wet heavy crap in march before!
Those plows look like the BOSS plows out here. Just a thought for your small need. I have a Samurai with a VW Diesel. I use a front hitch and the SnowSport plow. It is a small plow that is gravity fed. Drop the plow on the slides and run with it. I can plow parking lots as well as the street in front of my house. Using the front hitch on the EX I could also plow. Some use it on a rear hitch and a minivan. The best part is they cost less than $1600
I think the Ex will be just fine as a plow truck after you swap the front springs. I have a friend who plowed for a decade as his winter job with a 1974 Early Bronco half cab. The only other concern I would have for the Ex is adding some mirrors or cameras to assist in visibility while backing. Have fun!.
You guys are making me miss the snow!!!
Plowing doesn't have to destroy the steering and drivetrain. That depends on the nut behind the wheel! Make sure you're completely stopped before changing gears.
