Rear End

Hello all. Working on the next part of my truck, the rear end.
1965 F100 4x2, with
Code N – 4-Speed New Process 435 transmission
A9 – Rear Axle Code

The vehicle is geared so low, I'm wanting to shift to 5th gear . What is your advice on repacing the pumkin for a higher geared. What is "A9"? I have found three 68 F100 with auto trans, i was told the rear ends are geared higher and will work on my 65? Any other suggestions? Thanks all for your suggestions.

A9 = Spicer/Dana 60.2 Rear Axle / 3.54-1 / Limited Slip / 3,300 lbs. Rear Axle Capacity.

This optional integral rear axle is not a Dana 60 (F250's only), has an inspection cover. There is no "pumpkin" like a 9 inch has.

Edit: See post 3.

Thanks for the pictures o the two axles, the one i have looks very much like the 9 inch, nothing like the dana 60.2. This tell me I should be in luck with changig out the gear "pumkin". DOyou have any suggestions as to the gear ratio i shold be lookng for? Thanks

depends on what you want fuel mileage or power or a blend of the two and it also depends on your tire size i have a easy math equation i can show you if you need it but it really all depends on your choices of what you want to do with it

So you're saying your truck axle is NOT the 'A9' axle as the warranty data plate code indicates?
If you're sure you're working on a 9" housing, then what gear ratio does it have in it now?

If you're planning to stay with your NP435 4-speed transmission, then final drive is 1:1.
It will never feel or sound like 5th gear. The best way to get the 5th gear 'feel' is to swap in a 5-speed transmission.

But, to somewhat answer your question - I'll make some assumptions:

This will be a weekend cruiser and not a workhorse,
that you're planning to use the 352 V-8,
and the NP435 4speed transmission,
and fit it with 235/75-15 tires (29" tall)

With those assumptions, regardless of what rearend you run, I would gear it no less than 3.0 and no more than 3.50.

If the rear is still in the truck jack up the rear on jackstands with each wheel off the ground.

Mark the wheel.

Mark the drive shaft.

Place the truck in neutral.

Have a friend rotate the wheel while you watch the drive shaft.

Count how may times the drive shaft rotates compared to the wheel.

This is your ratio.

A 3.00 will be three times to one
A 3.89 will be 3.89 times to one.

Fast and easy way to tell gear ratio.

Thanks, I'm leaning more for gas mileage. I now know the rear end i have is a 9", have no idea of the ratio (Garbz provide instructions, thanks).

Based on the other replies, I learning. Alot to ponder.

The engine will play a major roll in this as well. I have the 300 and going to 3.0 is just to far for my truck. I am running 3.5 and am happy with it. I only have to come out of overdrive going up hill. Comes out of 3rd over and goes right up no problem.
