When running above 55mph and giving it gas to get it to downshift into 3rd it acts like its thrown up into neutral. It will up shift through the gears without any issues and below 55mph it will downshift into 3rd just fine. I’ve done a lot of searching and found that the MLPS and VSS sensors can cause this so I have changed both sensors with Ford parts. Then MLPS had already been updated with the new sensor and connector. I have cleaned the connectors and used dielectric grease on the connections. I didn’t find any water in any of the connectors. Changing these sensors has not changed the downshifting issue. I have also checked the solenoid connector and it is good and tight.
The transmission was rebuilt 36,000 miles ago and it included a new torque converter, valve body, solenoid pack and accumulator. When this started last month I had the transmission flushed at the Ford dealer since the new converter doesn’t have a drain plug.
I’m at a loss as to what to do next to fix the problem. Any help in getting this fixed would be greatly appreciated.
Check my lists in the Marketplace. I have the E4OD complete Ford manual posted there. If you plan to keep the truck it is worth it. If you are not interested, I may be able to send you some copies of the troubleshooting section in the manual.
Thanks for the info. I'll read through it. It was fine for a long time after the rebuild. The rebuild has been six years ago. I had the Ford dealer put it on their computer to look for any transmission codes and they couldn't find any codes at all for the transmission or any other codes for the truck. The mechanic thinks its in the valve body. I went ahead and took it home because I can change out the valve body, solenoid pack and accumulator myself in my shop. At this point I have to many other things going on until after the first of the year to be able to pull the pan and replace parts.
If there is a way to check the solenoid pack without pulling the pan and taking it off to ensure its working properly or not that sure would help to eliminate or verify it as a source of the problem.
I'm definitely interested in getting the shop manual for the E4OD that you have if it covers from 1989 and newer since that is what is in my truck. Could you let me know how much it is and if you I can use PayPal to pay for it.
