239 timing help

Ok so I posted a few months ago about my 51' flathead and that I got it running... Well it didn't last.

So what I'm asking now is will someone give me a "for dummies" explanation on how to set the timing? I feel like I hit a wall and its something simple. It has fuel to carb, and new carb. Valves all work... I'm checking all the plugs today.

Just want to make sure I'm not over looking anything.

Did it just stop running? Why do you think it's timing? If it was running, and stopped, that has nothing to do with timing. It could easily be your condenser is bad.

Well, I am guilty of over tinkering. And when it ran before it wasn't exactly perfect. I'm just trying to start from square one. I have fire at the points (condenser, coil, points all new).

When I spin it over, it hits randomly and eventually kicks the starter out. But never completely fires.

With the vacuum line to the distributor disconnected and plugged, set the timing so the bump on the crankshaft pulley is aligned with the pointer. That's all there is to it. Reconnect vacuum line, rev engine, make sure you are getting advance. Remember #1 cylinder is right next to the distributor.
