I've had problems with my 352 backfiring through the carb upon hard acceleration. I Backed the timing off from several degrees BTDC to 0 degrees BTDC. Now it has started to run rough at idle and stumble but not backfire under acceleration, and I think the timing could be involved. The plugs seem good and the air-cleaner is only slightly dirty. What timing are ya'll running and what do you suggest i check or adjust it too.
Are you using points? Or aftermarket electronic? Did this problem begin one day while you were happily motoring along or after you made some adjustments? I like initial timing at 12 degrees advanced. Of course you need good compression and a timing chain that is in good condition as well. A operating vacuum and centrifugal advance is also helpful. A crossed plug wire will cause this as well. Post back we want to know how this comes out. Oh yea, Dahn's law says "90% of poor running engines are caused by ignition problems".
I think ill add my two cents and say that ive had this problem with my 66 f100 352. maybe youve gotten this problem fixed but what i did was replaced the power valve on the bottom of my carb and that curred it right up but later i swapped to a new Holley 500 cfm 2 bbl carb. And I havnt had any problems with it since, I also never messed with the timing, but due to recent problems i wish i could see the timing marks on the balancer.
