Dreaded 38R sound?

I've heard about it, but I can't seem to catch the dread on mine. I opened the back window during a casual acceleration on the highway and my camera microphone caught what I can hear. I have hi-fi speakers on my computer, so I can catch it in playback from YouTube... can you? Is this what everybody is talking about?

You have an AIS intake like mine. There is no dreaded 38R noise. I had a 6637, and that's where the complaints come from. The stock turbo is loud with a 6637, and the 38r is REAL loud with a 6637 (towing is worse). Everyone is scared of the 38R because its noisy. Don't use an open intake and there is no problem in my experience.

Kinda wish I'd heard this a couple of weeks ago. Oh well, live and learn.

I had 6637, then AIS and now back to 6637. I 100% agree with with the above.

The problem with AIS was - I could suck the filter-minder into the red at will w/ 20k miles on the filter and subsequently was sucking oil out of the CCV. The latter also made for a lot of additional injector noise after a hard pull. I added as much as 1.5gals of oil after 1000mi pulling the camper. After switching back to 6637, I am back to normal - using 1/2 gal every 5k miles...

I tried to make a video of 38R/6637 with the Go Pro - but all you can hear is white noise with the suction cup mount stuck on the window.... I'll try again later today with a helper holding the camera.

My 38R is SOLD and T4/S366 to be installed SOON!!

I would love to do a direct comparison, but I may be putting this engine in my Excursion.

I had the same filter minder issues as Jason with AIS and my H2e setup. I also build a little more boost psi with the 6637. My turbo is also louder.

If that's a casual acceleration, I'd hate to see you really get on it. I can't remember the last time I touched 3000rpm.

oh, and fwiw, the your current setup sounds very familiar to my new setup with the 6637, van turbo, and ported housing.

I have the mountain tunes... you can tell by the backround scenery that this is not superfluous. This is why my RPMs get up high at casual acceleration. Without the mountain tunes, the engine lugs on many grades around here.

Filter Minder - yup. Gotta look at a bigger intake... maybe the AFE Stage 2? Anybody have experience with this?

I think I see a pattern here. Mabe we all need to change our air filter elements more often? I got rid of my 6637 because I was using 2 gallons of oil between 5k oil changes. With the AIS 1.5 quarts! My boost numbers also went up when I went to the AIS. I did recently add the fender sleeve.

Not trying to argue with anyone, just an observation and more questions.

I've had the AIS for years (at least 5 years or so) and I remember that the filter-minder would go into the red when I first installed it. I did some experimentation with it and I seem to remember (forgive my age) that it really was a filter-minder problem and that some models didn't pull down so easily. Didn't we find that a different filter-minder solved the pull down issue? It has with my AIS anyways...the filter-minder never pulls down into the red...hmmm. Wasn't there some study that showed the flow rate (in CFM) was comparable between the AIS and 6637?

Now all of that doesn't address the issue of sucking oil out of the CCV...I never had that problem and I can't even begin to explain why it would occur on some trucks and not others. I pull heavy quite often running hotshot loads out to the gold mines and my camper. I would switch to the 6637 if that had been a problem on mine, but it hasn't. I use no oil between oil changes...every 5k.

Well, if I was gonna change elements every 15k miles or less - it dang sure wouldnt be a $60 AIS!!!!

I hear good things about S&B intake... It should be quieter too.

The filterminder issue is this. The filterminder that comes with the AiS is much more sensitive than the factory filterminder. I put my factory filterminder in and I live where there are lots of gravel roads and I have 15k on my element and at 30+lbs of boost I am just now starting to pull the filterminder in a bit. Time for a new filter element soon.

Wow Tug, that really mild. Mine at 5+psi sounds like a jet ready for take off. I can only imagine if its that loud inside the cab, what people outside are thinking...lol.

I must be wired differently. With my AFE "Big Boost" BHAF intake, I love the sound of my 38R.

Tugly, quite smoking....it's bad for you.

Stock sticks and turbo: 20K miles between AIS filter changes - filter minder would just eek up on a hard burn at 30 PSI boost when the filter was due.

Stage II sticks and 38R: Filter minder pulls into red as soon as I installed the hardware and the filter has maybe 5K miles on it. I did the fender mod to the AIS housing long ago, so that's no help here. I'm pulling oil because I can see it in the spider, but no measurable amount in 1500 miles. I haven't even tried a hard burn in 80e yet - Stinky solidly sucks.
