MSOffice updates
I'm having an issue with Excel07 on my W7 machine. Periodically I'll get an error "sharing violation try saving as with another name"
I can do that, dump the original file -- and the stupidly named no extension copy that it also makes -- rename my copy, and it's all good.
Till it happens again. Doesn't happen on my XP machine.
I've seen reports that say it's -1) a known bug, or 2) it's caused by some of the Trend products.
I plan to drop my Trend AV -- it was a freebie with my new Dell, and it doesn't fill me with confidence. I also wanted to do the latest Office updates.
Tha's when I found that you have to sign up for Microsoft update, which turns on automatic updates. I don't really like that. I've been manually looking them over periodically and deciding what I wanted.
I THINK that I can set it to notify me and present a list, but I'd like to be sure. Windows updates had some bad moments early on. ( broken machines followed by quick patches of the update). It's probably all better now, but I'm no fan of being dumped on.
Long story short, can I set it to just present a list of updates?
(No, I don't want Apple or Linux )
Thanks,
hj
When you "sign up" for Microsoft update, all you're doing is making it possible for you to update other Microsoft products, like Office, and whatnot. You can still manually select what to update - that's the way I've got mine set up.
I thought that was the case, but they had some babble about automatically changing an update setting.
And sorry, but you'll have to settle for virtual reps -- you've helped me out too many times

I for one run Office Libre and Open Office.
Both are free and can run MS Office products.
My MS update is set for me to review and select what updates to apply.
I run MS Security Essentials and Defender.
I have Malwarebytes anti-malware for those special scans I run.
