I'm thinking of a new laptop, and Vista seems to be all that's available.
How (bad) is it?
I know that it's a hog. MS can't stop fattening up each new version. But, does it work OK? Does the fab aero transparent look really slow things down?
For my money the 'transparent' edges are a big so what. I can switch between apps without a problem. I haven't found anything that says that you can switch this glitzy stuff off, but I wish that you could. I know that it takes horsepower because I read that it disable itself -- if it judges that your computer is unworthy.
Anyway, I'd appreciate any comments on how it 's working.
I bought a new desktop around February/March and it has Window Vista basic home edition. The computer processor is a 3 GHZ P4. At the time, I wanted XP, but this was all I could find. I think Vista is all that is out there on new computers, but I could be wrong. It does take a little getting used to having used XP for the past 2-3 years. All I wanted the computer for was to surf the web and use it for running spreadsheets and the occasional documents. Given a choice between XP or Vista, I would still prefer XP, but I'm not complaining as Vista has been trouble free and hasn't crashed on me. Like anything else, you just have to set the computer up to let it check for updates.
I am using the previous Vista version called OS X by Mac. Ok, I'll get off my Mac snob soap box. I've heard some good things about Vista, it just has way too many bugs to fix before I would use it. Give it a year or so.
I bought a new laptop about 3 weeks ago. One of the reasons was because I WANTED Vista. I already own a copy of XP so if I have any problems then I can install that. I haven't had any problems with VISTA yet. Seems to be running fine (I made sure the laptop I bought had 2 GIG of RAM though).
Just bought a new laptop for work yesterday. Vista takes a little getting used to, but so far, no problems. Get the most RAM that you can afford. I don't think that you'll be able to squeek by with 512 like XP. The only annoying thing is the "warnings" that pop up all the time that ask you for permission to so stuff. Overall, I'm pleased.
I bought a Dell for my daughter, made sure it had enough RAM (free 2 gig upgrade) to run Vista. It came with Vista basic on it. It looks like a Microsoft copy of Linux to me. The first time I booted it up, I thought I was looking at a Linux desktop.
I don't care one way or another. I'm not impressed. I run XP on all my other machines and I'm in no particular hurry to upgrade.
If you really want to get XP on a new machine, order a Dell small business computer. They still offer XP and Vista as options. No, I'm not all that hot on Dell machines, but that's an option.
Vista is prettier then xp. I have had vista crash on me twice since ive had it for no reason at all, and I was not able to recover it.
Also whats with MS taking up like 3 or 4 gigs just for an OS? For that much space it sure doesnt work like it should.
I'm using Vista in my testing environment here (I work for a software company), and have to say, it's purty. The so called security ehancements are a joke though. Won't be putting Vista a real computer anytime soon. I'll have to dust off Win2000 workstation CD for a simple OS.
My only non-Mac is a micro-ATX form P4 3.2GHz, 1 Gig RAM, onboard audio/video. It's not the greatest thing in the world, but it's still more than useable. I get lots of free MS stuff from school, and my new copy of Vista Pro Business came back in February. I installed it for a few weeks and dumped it for XP. It's not that Vista was terrible, it just had absolutely no benefits on the hardware I was using. There were no real feature improvements I could find other than being different. (Plus MSI hadn't written any good drivers for that board and it would do some really weird stuff occasionally.)
My folks bought a new desktop with Vista and it was crap! My mom couldn't download any old info from her other computer onto the new one. She sent it back and she just got a new Gateway with XP and she's happier than a pig in poo! I haven't heard anything good about Vista and when the time comes to get a new desktop, I'm sticking with XP.
