For those who don't know, Microsoft now has their own anti-virus-malware-spyware suite. Google Microsoft Security Essentials and you will find it. It's a free download.
I just installed it on my first machine. Haven't found a problem yet. It's a clean interface. The realtime scanner seems as fast as the CA AV that it replaced, maybe a little bit faster. Handled the huge network folders without fuss. I'm totally fed up with CA shennanigans, so good ridance.
If you try it and have any issues, let's use this thread to discuss.
MAC users, no gloating needed or desired. This is a PC topic.
I've installed this on about 20 machines over the last few weeks. I must say I am impressed thus far. I've had zero compatibility issues. The initial scans picked up a bug on 3 machines that CA had ignored, and more importantly it successfully cured all 3. None of them were active infections, but still CA should have seen them.
Just read a relatively positive wiki about it. Supposedly it's designed for those who won't pay for AV.
Be aware that when you install it, it will change your Windows update to automatic ( I don't like that option). Apparently you can switch it back, but I wonder if it won't periodically 'fix' it for you.
Also, it valildates that you have genuine Windos(tm). No big deal, just a comment.

Good thing to know. And if you disable AU, then I'm not sure you will get the AV updates, which you really need daily. So kind of a catch-22. I use AU anyway, so not an issue for me.
Is it me or does anyone else find it ironic that Microsoft is in the security business and yet their OS and browser are full of holes that allow hackers, viriuses, spyware....etc..

I would find it too convenient if they were charging for Security Essentials.
I'm a bit surprised they didn't build it into Windows 7 though, or atleast give you the option when you install it.
I found something that bugs me a tad; If you don't do a manual scan every so often the status of the icon changes orange.
I don't need to do manual scans after I establish a baseline.
This could be a good feature for the average user though.
I just let it do an automatic quick-scan once a week, and it seems happy with that. And the scan is very fast so you may not even notice when it happens.
Am I the only one that had bad luck with it? I downloaded it yesterday, and after it installed my laptop locked up. Tried restarting, in normal mode but no luck. Tried safe mode and the laptop would actually start up. Ended up having to to a system restore from earlier in the day before I downloaded MSE. Laptop has Windows Vista 64 bit Home Premium version. 4 GB of RAM.
