Maintenance

I just bought a 2003 f250 7.3 power stroke and I am about to replace the IPR, is there anything else that I should do to it while I have it inoperable? I have replaced the Hpop rings, fuel grommets, cam sensor and filters. The truck has 251,000 on it and it still runs like a dream. This is my first diesel and I am hooked. I am replacing the IPR due to stalling while driving. Could drive for ten minutes and it would quit for about an hour. Never replaced this befor, any advice.

I recently changed mine when the electrical side of it died due to oil contamination. No hard to do but was easier with fuel bowl out. I needed to rebuild it anyway so it was a nobrainer. I also replaced my HPOP lines at same time. Ford recommends those be replaced every 100k miles so I figured it was good preventitive maint. International sells the same lines for much less $$. Check the IPR pig tail and replace if its degraded. Check ICP plug for oil...replace ICP if it is. Check main wire harness coming over from IDM on drivers side valve cover...prone to chaffing. I put a big wire loom cover on mine. I also replaced all the fuel sleeves and put some rubber around the metal fuel line on the passener side...prone to vibrating a hole in it.

That should keep you busy for a while. Check the FAQ section for more tips.

How about the 50 cent mod? See the 7.3 forum for more info. And add a sleeve to your high pressure power steering line where it rubs on the shock tower. Zip tie it all on there.

Before purchasing the IPR assembly....check for a loose tin nut.

I had the IPR coil quit on one of my trucks a couple of months ago. As far as I know, the coil is not available for purchase separately so you will have to get the entire IPR.

So, my advice would be to just replace the coil and see if that solves your problem. Of course you'll have to purchase the whole IPR assembly so just remove the new coil from the part and install it on your truck. Super easy to do and should take about 5 minutes. Make note of which way the tin nut goes on. If you put it on backwards then it may come loose later.
