[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Sep-02 AT 09:24 PM (EST)]My truck had an engine fire the other day, i got it out faily fast. The truck is a 77 F150 with the 400 in it. The wires, dis. vac. hoses, wire to coil, coil, are black and melted and will be replace. I really need to know where to go after that and what to look for as far as hidden problems. I think the problem was from the acc. pump on the carb spraying fuel on the dis. or the fuel line had a leak.
I really have not had time to really dig it to find the source of the problem. I have heard that this is not all that uncommen a problem on fords. Is that right???
So again i plan to
replace...
all wires ( to dis.&coil, plugs)
plugs
Dis.& cap
vac. hoses
rebuild ...
carb.
Any help/adives on this would be great...what have I missed, what other problems could be hidden. And am I the alone in the firey problem, hearing about a similar firey situation would be helpful.
I've seen a few do this. Usually caused by a dry rotted piece of rubber fuel line going into the fuel filter that springs a leak and gets on a bad set of plug wires. Fuel + spark = A mess!!!
The only other yhing that I would check would be the other wiring in the area, such as wires to the coil, sending units, ETC.
All vehicles have this problem, just like lxman said, a rotted fuel line. Steel lines crack, fittings come loose, some people use copper lines (bad idea). It comes down to one of those things that needs checking as part of a tuneup and oil changes. Fast lube joints are just that, -fast, but they don't check much.
Replace anything that looks like it got hot. I would replace the entire engine compartment wiring harness.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Sep-02 AT 10:39 PM (EST)]i do have queastion about the engine compartment wiring harness, where would one fine that part. Is it a dealer part or will better auto parts stores have it. Or can I make one myself , but the plugs on the end look very specialized. where should i go. And what is the likely hood the intake gasket was damage by the heat
i would never take my truck to a "crap lube " place.
also i have the EGR blocked off, i was reading another post where you (Torque1st) recommended recurving the OM Dis. to a guy who was going to run his 400 witout the EGR. Can you explane this recurve or where to get info on it, and any other advise on that subject.
thanx again
