o my truck is a 1979 F250 with a 351M. has 80000 original miles on it. i was driving down the road and all of a sudden it cut out when i was it 4th gear. i stopped and took off again and the engine started to cut out in 3rd gear. i take it to my girlfriends and work on it. was told it was ignition box, replaced it. seemed to run alright. another thing is also if i let it sit for a while it would run fine for a about a few minutes and do the same thing. i check the fuel filter and fuel lines, whcih is all new and it looked alright. thought it was carb, changed it and it did the same thing. when i would hold the choke it would run fine until i hit the gas. the conclusion i came to that it was something with the fuel delivery. when i unhook the fuel line from the carb and turn engine over it seems to shoot a good flow of fuel. but what i was thinking there mite be a litle plug in the line or somewhere. it has a 38 gallon side mount tank. i think it is poly or something. so what do u think
I had the same problem with a 351 in a bronco, It would just die for no apparent reason. sometimes for a few minutes and sometimes for a few seconds. It took me untill I was doing something with the distributor to see that the vacume advance was sticking.Another time I had a aftermarket high performance coil go bad, sometimes it would heat up and die. After a couple seconds it would run fine.
hmm could be alot of things fuel pumps are cheap for these old fords somtimes they do strange things another thing that happened to me is the coil wires came lose in the clip the clip was on good but the wires had backed out i would check them first just my thoughts
i was thinking maybe it was the coil, could check. the distributer is a few years old but will check it. its my very first vehicle but so far its been fun working on it. getting alittle annoying though
just a thought I had a 460 that the distributor had a short on the magnetic pickup...
if I pulled the vacuum and plugged it it run fine...that is how I narrowed that one....
I also had 72 torino sport with a 460 that had a crack on the pickup that only showed
up after 3-4 runs down the dragstrip...goodluck...fastford456
For a diagnosis we need more info because there are to many possibilities. I struggled with a similar prob and found the coil to ignition plug was bad. Yours could be one of many.
i was thinking it mite be the coil or something like that. better check before i tear into the fuel tank and lines. whats weird though is when i changed the ignition box it seemed to run alright but that mite just be a coincidence.
Does it die slowly like its running out of gas? If not than Id look at the ignition system. Maybe the plug wires are old and the coil wire is touching a ground.
yeah i still havent checked the coil. one thing i forgot to mention was this all happened, i was driving down a bumpy road and both exhaust pipes fell off. then after about 10 mintues drive to auto parts store it started to act up.
agter replacing many parts, found out what was wrong. the guy before i bought the truck put new fuel lines on it. well he joined 2 lines togerther with an adapter, but it wasnt for fuel and it melted shot, problem solved, thanks for all the help
To shorten future troubleshooting time, you may want to install an inline fuel pressure gauge. They are cheap and easy to install. Ive used summit brand and jegs brand with no problems.
