Won't heat up

Started yesterday, truck isn't getting up to normal temp. Barely gets half way to normal. The only thing I can think of is thermostat stuck open? Everything else is fine, engine purrs like a kitten, full power, the works.

Here it is after 1hr of driving:

Any ideas? Oh, I am a bit overdue for an oil change, about 17k miles, normally I do it at 15k. But I can't imagine why that would do it. Everything else is up to speed as far as maintenance.

Okay, a few things wrong here. 1, you need some form of aftermarket gauges. The ones on the dash are dummy lights. 2, oil changes should never be more than 5k. Our injectors pulverize the oil in these motors by that point.
But anyways, its hard to see if you really have an issue with ought the right stuff.

As far as oil goes I use Delvac 1 large engine diesel truck oil, and change the filter every 5k. I've done it the entire life of the engine, and I'm at 222k with no real issues to date.

I know the gauges aren't the best, but I know their normal opperating readings, and my gauge is half of what it normally is, that's why I was concerned. I changed the coolant in the spring and it's still exactly where it was when I changed it. The only thing different is outside temp, it's in the high 30's and low 40's the past couple days, noticeably colder than normal.

I'd say you have a bad coolant temp sensor. Even with the thermostat stuck open that indicator should be showing normal after an hour of driving.

Most likely the T-stat has stuck open. You should think about getting some thing
like the ScanGuage II >>> Link >>> ScanGaugeII : Linear Logic - Home of the ScanGauge
And you are way over on the oil change even if you have a by-pass filter in it.
Your oil is most likely worn out by the injectors. Take a sample and send it in.
You will find that the viscosity has dropped very low and that is bad for bearings.

I disagree. Every vehicle I've seen with a stuck thermostat will stay cold. If the engine gets up to normal temperature just cruising around with a stuck thermostat, than the cooling system is worthless and couldn't even hope to cope with a heavy load.

The 88 Ranger I had was down right COLD when the T-stat failed open.
And a 6.0L has so much more radiator surface that it will be cold too.

Well, looks like I need to buy 4 gallons of oil, some filters, coolant sensor, coolant. One of the key things that set me off was normally after 20min with the heat on full blast I'll start sweating. However I noticed myself not sweating to death, so I definitely feel that the temp isn't getting as high as it should. It got warm, but not heating like it would normally.

I think there's a pretty cheap/easy way to confirm. Unless I'm mistaken, the oil/coolant temp sensors are the same part #. Swap the oil temp & coolant temp sensors and see if their dash indicators read the same as before.

Definately a t-stat is needed. Likely only running about 140-160 degrees.

If you use Apple products (iphone/ipad) the DashBoss is a killer set-up for extra gauges.

My Vote goes to Bad Thermostat

OEM Will last alot longer then AfterMarket

It could go either way Bad thermostat or bad temp sender

A bad sender will normaly Jump Around alot especialy during warmup

A Stuck thermostat will Cause a Vehicle to run Cold Or Overheat (Slim chance of overheat in this truck the Radiator so Big) but does happen in other Autos

Gauges have been on my list, I just haven't gotten around to it.

I do have an iphone though. Maybe I'll get the obd2 connection for it and see waht I can find.

And I've only ever used oem anything to replace and repair my truck, from brake pads to sway bar links to axels to filters. Except oil. I really do swear by the delvac stuff.
