Right. I have a castle nut. From what Gary said there were 2 separate nuts on the spindle that needed to be installed. I think if I tightened the castle nut to 22 ft/lbs it would really bind the bearings. In most cases on the spindle nut (castle nut) they can be turned on by hand and the cotter pin installed. There is something binding on the back side of the hub I'm pretty sure. I'll take pics tonight to show you what I'm talking about.
There should be the outer bearing, a big washer, then the castle nut goes after that washer, then the cotter pin.
I don't torque bearings, I tighten them real tight with a socket, spin the wheel by hand a few times, untighten enough that I can turn it by hand, tighten it back up as tight as I can with my fingers, put the cotter pin, and done!
Always done it like that, and it usually always puts them tight enough I have no play in the wheel, or sometimes I'll have a lil touch of play, but better that, then too tight and burn the bearings!
I do have a locknut on the spindle, I wasn't saying that. The way Gary put it it sounded like there were two separate nuts on the spindle. A regular nut and the locknut. But I might have minconstrued that information. So I think there was a misunderstanding between what Gary was saying my brain translating the information.
So, I think I'll try John's suggestion of loosening the nut after I seat the bearing and see what happens.
I didn't get a chance to take any pics of the dust cover tonight but I'll get those tomorrow.
OK. I got both rotors on. The right side is a little tight but I think it'll be OK. I got some pics of the work:
Left side rotor:
Right side rotor:
I got the new drive gear for the transmission as well:
I got some repair work to do in the cab where the shift rod goes through the floor:
I also found some cracks in the bell housing around the clutch fork ball and had them repaired:
The oil pan has been repainted and reinstalled:
I still have a little ways to go. I'd like to be able to find a rear driver's side door but I don't think that'll happen. Also, I'm going to be getting new carpet and headliner eventually as the carpet is not good and the headliner is nonexistent. Also I'd like to get door panels for all four doors so if you guys have any idea where I might find those I would appreciate it. I can find the front door panels without much trouble, it's the rear that are as rare as finding a diamond in a Cracker Jacks box.
I was just going to put a stereo in the truck, but I decided to rip the entire dash out instead. Figured while I was at it I would figure out why the vents won't change.
Since I had the dash out I decided that I would take all the trim pieces out as well as the headliner. The seats are also gone. The carpet is next.
This is turning into a major project.
I do have a question. The door panels are pretty bad. Some are sun damaged and others have holes in them from sun damage. Anyway, is there a way to repair the plastic with some kind of Bondo type material?
Also, if anyone has a lead on some rear doors I would like to hear about it.
I haven't tried Bondo as I didn't have any holes. But, I have sanded the sun-damaged plastic off to get to good stuff below and it worked pretty well. I had to rinse the sandpaper frequently as it got loaded up with the dead plastic, and I was using 60 grit wet or dry. I took a LOT off.
I haven't as yet, but I have the SEM paint. What I found when I sanded was that there's enough plastic in the parts that is damaged, like the window sills, that I was able to sand to good plastic that had color. That was on the 82 Explorer, and the guy I sold it to was happy with the panels.
Well, I got the dash out tonight. I think I'll have a harder time getting it back in...
Anyone know how to get the level door out? Mine is really loose and moves up and down in the hole. Unless that's the way it's supposed to be. I don't really know since this is the first dash I've removed.
Also, it seems the mice have made their own door in the blend door. How inconsiderate of them to not use the lever...
So, more work to do and it seems I'm farther than ever of getting it back together.
Don't know how to get that door out, but I do have a unit in the attic I could look at if you need me to do so. And, my projects are always 2 steps forward and 1 back, although sometimes it seems like it is 1 forward and 2 back for a while. But, eventually I get done.
If it wouldn't be too much trouble would you look at yours and see what it's supposed to be like? I'm going to a salvage yard on Saturday so I can look there to see if any have the dash out and see what the level door is supposed to feel like.
