i need to pull the motor out of my truck today and all my help has ran off on me. (dad and brother) so i was wondering if you guys could help me on pulling a 390 out of my 74 f250 4x4 4 speed. i need to know where to start and if the grill needs to be removed. only the motor is coming out not trans. tips on remembering where wires go to and such. grandpa is still helping but he is not in the greatest shape so he will probably sleep most of the time. plz and thanks.
That's tuff when family runs. First remove the hood, gas line at pump, exhaust (be prepared for bolt breaking) battery cable and other body area to engine wiring, throttle cable, bell bolts, and finally engine mounts. Hope I didn't forget anything, but you will be there you can see.
I'd pull the radiator too, makes sure you don't bash it. If the engine is out for a while use baggies and a felt tip sharrpie and mark the bolts and nuts it'll help, tape the wires with some masking tape with a tail on it and mark them also. go slow and all will be well when it goes back in.
Just take your time and mark/label everything and take pics if you have a camera. I pulled the 428 cj and C6 tranny in my 69 mustang and then re-installed by myself. Not a truck, you have a hell of a lot more room to work with. Just take your time and if you start getting frustrated take a break or walk away from it till the next day. Remember, no short cuts on safety. Vehicles can be replaced, not people.
I don't mean to intercept this thread but I have a relevant question. If looking for an engine lift to pull the engine, how high a lift should it be to clear the engine from the truck? I was looking at buying one with an 8' max boom height but that seemed too short. How high do you need to go?
thanks for the help guys. but to be honest as soon as i got in front of it, it all came back to me and i got it out and tore down yesterday cleaned today and painted now just waiting on the heads to be done
