Warming transfer case
Well as I'm preparing to get stuff ready to drain my transfer case and do my differentials. Reading most post people usually drive on 4H for about 15 miles or so (as straight as possible). Then after letting everything warm up drain everything so you have warm fluid for the draining just like the working on the transmission.
I know that usually most people would find a good spot to really get running in 4x4 mode like off road, but around were I live there ain't much areas to go off road. If I run in 4H on asphalt I know that it's best to run as straight as possible, most of my areas have very little curves and the curves aren't hard curves, they are very slight curves.
Would it be best for me to find a good spot to go off road in my area to really test everything out.

I just drain mine,,,, it takes less than 4 qts. And it's tranny fluid, not as thick as gear oil. If your worried, let it drain for a while.

4x4 isnt to bad on most turns in the road
Now a U-Turn it may hop on dry hard surface or if you turn a corner
I did mine a few weeks back and went down the hiway in 4x4
you can always switch it out for a Hard turn and lock back in the straights
Mine took 2 qt for transfer case I just went with same weight oil as original

Or if you have auto/lock hubs just lock them and drive.
leave the transfer case in 2H the front diff is turning
and the lube is mixing up. The transfer case has ATF in
it and you really don't need to warm it really. Also
by the time you get the covers off the diff it may
have cooled anyway. That Ford grey stuff is really
tough stuff and does not like to let go.

+1!
Also - I agree w/ above posts on just draining it. The proper fluid is pretty thin.

I wold not remix the fluid all over the transfercase and diffs when the fluid is already at the bottom of the housings, ready to drain.
Mixing the fluid around to drain the fluid is counter productive. The fluid will be mixed on all the parts yet you are trying to drain it all out.

Benny - you are correct. The owner manual states:
Transfer case
fluid
Motorcraft
MERCON
ATF
4x4 vehicles 2.0 quarts
(1.9L)
My opinion is that the RedLines and Royal Purples make specific fluid for the transfer case and I would use that over standard ATF.
I will admit that I had forgotten that our manuals specifically recommended it. Good catch Benny!

Sometime after I put the spreadsheets together I did a bunch of research on the fluid and decided on the SynchroMax (wanted a synthetic). During that time, I called Royal Purple and talked to their technical sales person awhile on the benefits - they talked me into it.
Here is a good reference for changing the fluid:

It took a while to get it delivered to the dealer, but there is a transfer case fluid. It's made by mc and is labeled x case fluid. I've used it once.

I will add to guzzels post (did read that before I chaged mine too)
walmart sells a .50cent plastic Flex tube that screws to qt of oil works slick compared to that big old funnel deal Guzzel used
and cheaper than the transfer pump mentioned
