Gotta 96 5.0 4x4.. I've seen numerous people mention upgrading the cam... Why evxactly will I gain/lose from doing this? What all will I have to buy? What kind should I get? I'm completely lost when comes to specifics for stuff like this.. So any help is welcomed... And is it even with it cause I've got 217,000 miles on the truck...
Also my truck does have MAF and 31" tires... As well as 3:55 gears and honesly I wanna change the hearing but that's closer to 1500$ which is by I'm my range at the time
Personally with that kinda mileage I don't see the worth in putting a "hi perf" cam in it. Liklely it's worn too much(bearings and cylinders/rings) and trying to get more out of it will be a moot point.
Putting gears in it will help right now. Yes, I'd believe you will have $1500 in putting new gears in both ends. Between gears, bearings/seals and installation.

A vaccum test would tell a LOT about the general health of the engine...
My truck just turned 200,000 miles and pulls 20hg of Vaccum at Idle/0-1hg of Vaccum at WOT...
Couldn't ask for any better, out of a 200,000 mile truck...

My thought also. Need to asess the quality of the motor before throwing money at it. Granted the cam/lifters could be reused in a rebuild(since it is a roller cam), so it's not a throw away. But if the motor has enough blowby, then trying to turn the wick up will be not such a good thing
Maybe a set of headers/dual exhaust would be a simple upgrade for now and will work later also. Bump the timing, K/N air filter(cold air kit). Few "cheap" things you can do to help. Being a 4wd and a 302 means it was never a real powerhouse even when new.

Yes...A 5 min Vaccum test will tell the tale of the Rings, etc...If very little vaccum is made...Don't even bother...It'll have to be rebuilt as it stand...
If it makes vaccum like my truck...Then a Camshaft/Bearing/Lifters is acceptable, IMPO...
