96 f150 cam help
hi all, iv got a 96 f150 4x4 with the 5.0 that im in the proccess or rebuilding and i have no idea what cam to really use, now the rebuild came with the stock cam but i want somethin that will give it a little more power and lug but i dont want to have to modify my whole upper end to put 1 in just somethin that would be a good replacement with maybe some 1.7 rockers to sweeten the deal, all i use the truck for is my dd and the only other mods i have is a k&n cold air intake, shorty hedders and a 4in lift with 33s

Lug as in low rpm grunt? Sorry.. that's not gonna happen without a 347 stroker assembly, a 5.8 transplant... or a supercharger.
Your signature says 35" tires but I see you also have 4.56 gears in this truck so either way you're already setup about as good as can be, to maximize what's available swap in longtube headers and add 1.7 roller rockers to the stock cam.. it's about as good as it gets for a low-mid rpm torque cam.

no the 1 in my sig is another 96 that i had i traded it for the 1 i got now just havent changed my sig yet, this 1 just has 33s and stock 3:55s wich i plan on changing to 4:10 eventualy those 4:56 i had were way to low, as far as the grunt i dont want it to sound rediculous or anything just somethin that sounds a little better than the stock smooth idle, but if i cant thats fine no biggie

so my best bet would be to just leave the cam stock and upgrade rockers and a few other bolt ons, by the way it is a HO 5.0 if that makes a diff, and i had a buddy tell me that the e303 cam would be good but he has it in a mustang but its the same motor idk how that would be in a truck
Cams that work well in a 3500lb car suck badly in a 5000lb truck, if you put it in this motor the useful powerband will go from 0-4500rpm to 3500-65000rpm.

haha well if that 460 got the mpg my 302 did or gas was $1 a gallon then i would haha, and yea iv heard theirs just not much you can do to these 302's as far as power unless you wana go drastic and drop some money in it, but like i said im not lookin for alot more power out of it really just somethin that sounds and performs a little better than stock, it usualy wouldnt be so hard to find a cam for me but this thing has to have all that computer compatible cam crap and i just get lost

i do know for a fact that it is a roller motor and those usualy were put in mustangs and flat tappet in trucks, the way it sounds to me kinda is that ford was jsut slappin the last of the 302's they had in 96 into whatever they could this thing has all kinds of weird parts the egr line i just had to buy yesterday a ford dealer only item the said shouldnt of even been on a 302 it was made for the 5.4

Ford changed the cam in these truck motors several times over the years and each cam made a little more power than the previous one, but that doesn't make it a HO motor. You're right about the firing order though this version uses the 351/HO sequence.

There are lots of cam options for this motor but ALL of them push the powerband up the tach.. that's the nature of the 5.0 beast it doesn't really have enough displacement to function as a traditional truck motor so if you want more power you got to spool it up and it'll happily oblige.
