How do I fix this frame ?

I have this spot behind the rear spring hanger thats like missing metal . its flat from the backside . Its like what would happen if you just stayed in the same spot with a sandblaster for a really long time if that makes sense . I am going with a mark viii irs in the truck anyhow , so this will not be a mounting point . And the frame will be boxed here anyhow

I am thinking of cutting it out and making a patch , welding the patch in , then welding a backing plate on the inside of the frame . Sound good ? Or is there another way ?

These two small spots on the frame are the only place that has this type of damage , the rest is pretty solid .

That is what happens when rust grows in a captured area. The same has happened in the depressed area at the left side of the picture. Blast the area until clean, cut out the depressed area and weld in a patch for the perfect repair. The welders will comment further.

Leroy,

your plan is sound... cut back to good metal, patch with 1/8" or 3/16" patch material, making it flush on the outside of the rail... then box if you like. Back past the spring hangers there's not a lot of strain on the frame... just the box weight and bumper, so I doubt that boxing would be needed... but it can't hurt.

It's amazing that a sand blast nozzle can find missing. Just be sure you cut back far enough to find good metal to weld to. Use a welder with sufficient heat to get good penetration (not a 110 volt 80 amp wire melter) then grind to make it invisible.

here's one we did on my frame taking out a Volare front clip and rebuilding for a MII crossmember

later'

I had a couple of major holes in my frame. I patched with 10 gauge cold rolled, welded in from the front. Then I touched up some areas on the back where penetration wasn't good enough. Then boxed with more 10 gauge. Good to go.
