Always start by taking the battery cables loose. Then lift the belt off the pulley. Basically eat your wheaties and pull strait up on the belt and pull it off the pulley. I think the three bolts on top are 1/2". After those are loose lift the alternator off the cradle so you can get to the connections on back. There is a harness connector that you push the tab and pull it out. You'll need a 10mm to remove the power lead. It's pretty easy. When I had my 6.0 I ran a spray pump that was high amperage. I bought a lifetime warranty alternator from advance auto. I was changing it every month or so it was junk. I then bought a DB electric 225 amp unit it lasted a year. After that I went with the DC power 200 amp unit. It lasted until I unloaded the truck. Just my experience. After doing this a couple times it becomes a 5 min procedure. It's the easiest one I've ever changed.
I just replaced mine. I searched some thread here and found the one on tipping the alternator to replace. I was skeptical at first because that tensioner is tighter that all H#ll. But it worked. Unhook your wires and connector. Remove the two front bolts and the slowly remove the rear most bolt. The alternator will tip forward under the tensioner pressure and then when you have the bolt completly out just tip it forward off the belt. Installation is just the opposite. And it sure beats the special tool or fighting with muscling up the belt. I think the whole process was 15 minutes. Longest part of the whole process was getting out the tools and step bench. Hope that helps
