From what I understand the biggest issue with PSD turbo's were that they are designed to create more boost than the IDI can handle safely without dropping a ton of money into it to toughen it up. That and it would take some fab work to mount it
I could be completely wrong, but I think that is what I remember from last time it was asked.
I'd do a search, there has to have been answers to this in the past. Probably with pictures of people that have done it. Or issues that they found in the process.
Space would be the biggest issue probably. If its cheap, buy it and try it. IIRC the psd uses a weird flange so at the very least you would have to fab an adapter, along with charge piping.
Personally i wouldnt use a 7.3 turbo, from what i understand theyre kinda crappy
this guy wants $850 bucks for it... WAY OUT of my budget.... I am trying to schmooze(yes I just said "Schmooze") him into a deal on a trade.... and maybe some cash... gotta see what I can get out of an Aluminum Isuzu engine that I am stripping clean and go from there...
I really need a turbo for this thing but I don't see spending 800 bucks on a lit for it... seems a bit excessive to me.
$850 = LOL, id tell him to get ****ed. You can get much better turbos for that price. If youre just looking for something a little better than stock that can handle a bit more fuel, i would look into a hx35, its a good turbo with lots of upgrades, has the same flange as our "stock" kits and i personally dont think it would be all that hard to "Schmooze" one into the engine bay. They can be had relatively cheap too, i got mine for $140, but it was missing the WG actuator.. well it was there just fubar'd
Yes it will work, but a good amount of work. Only reason I fabbed one on mine is because I replaced the turbo on my '03 7.3 PSD and had it as an extra. Had my best friend autocad an adapter and bolted it on. Barely fits under the cowel area, and I run an intercooler so fitting onto the snail wasn't an issue for me. Will it work? Yes, worth the time and money? ...eh
I should elaborate a bit, the 99-03 turbo I used uses a donut style exhaust inlet, imo, buy one without that style or buy an adapter kit to use a T4 flange like you already have, conseuently my turbo sits forward another inch because of the adapter. You'll also need to fab a pedestule. What I did was weld up a mount, cap off the stock return hole, and just send the return line down to the oil pan. I'm currently on the hunt for a different turbo because I really don't wanna spend the money rebuilding my old PSD turbo.

I don't have a turbo yet.... I am trying to decide which way I want to go for a complete setup...
Dont wanna steal but @Hairybox What is a list of some good compatible turbos? Without just going and dropping 2k into a new banks.
I really wanna turbo this sucker and it 's a chore learning and reading all the stuff about these 409erb19bomber turbos hah. as far as im concerned hx35 sounds good...
Me? Id say get a hx35, he351/he351ve, or an eaton M112 supercharger. Thats whats cheap around here and easy to find. Seems alot more cummins people are swappin out turbos than Ford / Chevy. Racin is the one you want to go to for turbos, lol thats who i go to anyway
You wanna be real cool, find a turbo for a 6.7 psd
