Up Pipe Questions

I have seen some ads for up pipes and have a few questions. How do you know when to replace the up pipes, is it general maintenance? How are they to replace? Is it a do it yourself project?

Many people will replace them when they begin to leak. You have the option of standard or bellowed and while standard will eventually need to be replaced, they say that bellowed ones are a one time fix. I am one of the strange ones and I replaced mine before they actually started to leak so I could do the repair on my schedule when the money was available. It is a job you can do yourself but I would plan for an entire day unless you get help from someone who has done them before. Search the forum and you will find plenty of information on how its done.

if you have pulled your turbo before its about a 2.5 hour job....if you havent....well its gonna take a lot longer.....pull the turbo off.....pull out the uppies....put in the new uppies.....re-install the turbo.....

Here is the LINK to Guzzle's Maint and Mods for Pocket's Bellowed up-pipe install. Same procedure
applies if you were to remove the stock up-pipes and reinstall them with new donut gaskets.

I am on the fence too as to replace the $6 donut gasket and new bolts.

or spend $450+ for the bellowed. (funds are tight)

but I am cheating a little cause I have a van so this job is much easier than the trucks.

if there leaking, you will notice some soot on the upper part of the pipes. hard to miss

if you get over to Bozeman any time soon, you are welcome to check out the task with a better view before you tackle your truck. I have never dont them (yet) so I can't offer any more advice.

I'll have to keep that in mind as I have boy/girl twins at MSU and am over that way at least once a month.

MTDewX: It is really easy to do the up-pipes on a van because you leave the turbo in place. Just remove the two bolts attaching the up-pipe to the manifold (laying on your back under the van with a ratchet closed end wrench and a 1/4" drive socket) - no donut there. And then undo the two bolts which attach to the turbo pedestal - donut there. (Lower bolts are different size than upper bolts - like 10mm on top and 11mm or 12mm on bottom.)

But here's the deal: I have been told that bellowed up-pipes are not available for the van and the bellowed up-pipes for the trucks won't fit.

Please let me know if find otherwise.

hmm, interesting for sure. what I was meaning and atleast thought about was the OP is only 2hrs east of me and if I was more experienced I would offer to drive over and help with his up-pipes.

I wonder why they dont fit. guess I am stuck doing donuts and new bolts. I am not worreid about the job since I have a van. with all going on right now, I will probably wait through winter anyway to do them. I am working on other issues right now before the snow really starts to fall

I emailed Clay at Riffraff, and he said if years are right (99-03) we should be good to go. now I just have to figure out how to afford them. on top of everything else I need on my list.

If your handy with a welder and fab skills you could consider making your own, or if you would like to continue to run stockers, you could use a medium pipe expander, if the end aren't eaten away, to swage the ends, and use the FelPro or OEM gaskets and sealer. Just a thought.

I wouldn't bother with bellowed uppies for a van because its so easy to replace the gaskets. If you do decide to just replace the gaskets...you can go with Felpro or OEM...I prefer OEM since they fit much better and allow the flange to close up completely onto the collector. The Felpro gaskets are much thicker and makes it so you can't tighten the bolts all the way (which may be why some folks say the Felpro gaskets don't last as long...)
