Did a search but came up empty handed. A friend of mine is changing the oil in a 2002 Ranger 4 Cylinder and wants some help. What oil is reccomended for that engine?
It will say on the back of the oil bottle. Pass motorcraft spec (some long number/letter combo) If you look around in the oil forum here you can see the exact spec.

You should tell the guy to read the users manual that came with the truck. All info is in that manual

It's a great forum, too! I've learned a whole bunch over there.
And Rand is right, you have to be careful about the tougher Ford specs. Castrol 5W-20 meets/exceeds those Ford specs:
SAE 5W-20: is a premium, multi-grade oil, providing cold start protection with Exceptional Fuel Economy. SAE 5W-20 exceeds API service SL, SJ and SH, as well as exceeding ILSAC GF-3/GF-2 for API Certified Gasoline Engine Oils and Ford WSS-M2C153-H. SAE 5W-20 should only be used in vehicles where SAE 5W-20 is recommended by manufacturer.
I have noticed that Castrol engine oils and tranny fluids are always careful to meet Ford specs. Castrol and Ford seem to get along very well. Just an observation on my part.

You are absolutely correct. And I don't want to get flamed for saying this, but it isn't a guy. Not that girls can't/don't know as much about cars as guys do, but this one doesn't happen to know a lot of specifics. She wanted to learn how to change it, so I offered to show her and I just wanted to make sure of the right oil.
Thanks for the replies. I know that the Castrol has "designed for 2002 and up Fords and Hondas" or something like that on it, but I just wanted to check.
Bad idea. Helping a girl with her car is like feeding a stray cat.
hehehehe
The only time you'll see her is when she wants something

Yeah, I know how it can get like that, but she is a good friend and I see her a lot. And she was pretty interested in learning how to do it herself so that she could do it next time. And I won't lie, she's pretty darn good looking and drives a Ranger.
Well the spec is really only posted on the 5w-20 oil which ISNT used in the 4.0
Something like a double length(time) test with higher standards vs the api test. Some of the 5w-20 oils dont meet it. I dont think any 5w-30 oils fail because the ford specs are different for 5w-30 oil.
Note: I'm sure I could find oil that fails, but not major brand oil(something i recognize).
