I'm sure this has probably been asked before but a quick search didn't show anything.
I know several of you recommend nothing but OEM filters and provide very logical reasons for them. That being said, is there any reason why a Motorcraft external transmission filter must be used or would an aftermarket filter suffice?
geees! I just paid full price on the filter from the dealer...but anyhow..is this a simlple swap? anything that i should know before i change the filter myself? Tranny fluid was changed a few days ago (heated flush) but not external filters was replaced. I was told by the dealer that there was no need. But read somewhere that every 30k should be replaced. SO i will do it regardless. The internal filter was new so that was left in place...
And one more question, where is this external filter located at. Thank you.
on the passenger side in front of engine bay near the radiator..about the size of a small roll of toilet paper. if you take that cover of use an air impact..otherwise you might break it with a ratchet
nope. when u use an impact gun on that thing to remove, use the impact gun again on it AFTER you put a few ounces of Mercon SP in the cup, and hand-tighten it. about 2 to 3 hits of that impact should be perfect to get it back tight and snug.
also, this is straight from ford and common sense. at every transmission flush or drain and refill, the external filter has to be changed every time. the internal filter can be changed every other tranny fluid change.
this is my personal thing but lately, i've been doing my tranny fluid drain, drop pan, and refill every 15k miles. ford recommends changing out tranny fluid and external filter every 30k miles. i'm just paranoid. lol.
i believe ford states in their procedures that the external filter housing has to be torqued to 37 ft lbs. now, since u will break the lines just using a regular torque wrench to get it to 37 ft lbs, that's why it was recommended to use an impact wrench. after u hand tighten it, then hit it with the impact wrench for 2 to 3 hammers, and it will be perfect.
Along with the external filter how many quarts of Mercon SP should i have on hand before I drain the Torqueshift tranny? Book says 17.5 qts but how many for a drain and filter and fill?
Changing the ext. filter it will take 8 ozs. Draining the tranny with the drain plug takes 8 qts. No need to drop the pan unless your bored and have too much time on your hands. The internal filter is changed during rebuilds.

I disagree Dom. The housing should bottom out just like the oil cap and then it only needs snugged as in wrist tight with a socket.

You didn't get that info straight from Ford. Ford doesn't recommend changing the internal filter.
I would change the external filter at the interval recommended in the owner's manual. I get the torque value from the shop manual. I don't have either manual to look those up. The internal filter gets changed at a rebuild.
After Job #2 2008 there is no external filter and the internal filter DOES need to be changed. Once again, that interval is in the owner's manual.
