Maybe I havent been around long enough or missed the story. How/When did you become disabled? Im assuming it was while serving.
Sorry to hear... PM the story if you dont want it on here.
Or ignore me all together. Some things are just too personal and I would understand.
Either way.. thanks for serving and glad to have ya around here!
IIRC, Brownie has a back injury.
Not to sound heartless here, but Disabled is a too widely thrown around term.
Disabled to me means your stuck in a wheel chair.
You are DIS Able
As in NOT ABLE.
It's obvious that brownie here is not stuck in a chair, but his back injury prevents him from doing a lot of tasks that we take for granted.
I forgot what he told me happened, but IIRC think he's got a weight lifting limit and is in pain daily. Fused vertebrae too.
That's not meant to sound heartless, its just another PC term we throw around like candy that doesn't explain it.
Brownie here is one of the lucky few to still be able to provide for his family despite his injury, unlike some of our other brave soldiers who don't have that ability anymore.
It's like Shell Shock.
What is it now?
Combat fatigue syndrome?
****, Call that stuff as it is so people know whats up.
For the sake of our terminology, brownie cannot provide as he'd like for his family, thus labeled Disabled.
Somebody who deserves the help given to those on disability.
Not these entitlement #@$*( who scam the system so they don't have to work.
Totally fine William. Theres a few things about our society and how this country is run that get under my skin too...
I just was curious because 'disabled' had me thinking he was stuck in a wheel chair... walker... missing a limb... or severe brain trauma.
Thats why I was worried because I also recall Brownie is like 21 or 22? And being as that is around my age I couldnt imagine a life like that.

all that I know for sure is that his back is jacked up pretty bad.
Wow, for some reason I haven't been getting my email updates for this thread...

Let's see, to answer some of the questions... I'm 26 years old, served just under 4 years in the Marine Corps before being medically retired for having 3 bulging discs in my low back and disc degeneration which was brought on by military training (no fused vertaebrae, sorry William). I recently lost my retirement benefits because they felt that my back wasn't as bad as it was when I got out a year and a half ago (don't get me started on this whole situation, let's just say I'm not pleased with the way the medical board handled it).
My back pain changes from day to day depending on what I have been doing, how I slept, etc. Some days I have little pain, and occasionally my back goes out completely to the point where I can't even tie my shoes or sit in a car without being totally reclined. That can last for a few days, or over a week.
Since I've been out of the military I have been able to control my activities more to minimize my pain as much as possible.
Anyways, I am not trying to sit on the couch eating cheetos on the government's dime. I'm using my GI Bill benefits to get my degree so that I can work and provide for my family in the future.
Pain is no fun at all, I know. Good for you buddy, keep moving when ever you can. I hate hearing these horror stories of the treatment of service people. Its not right!!
I just dont get it.! Person goes to defend this country and our freedoms...when they get injured because that can happen...we then turn our backs on these heros...its one thing if it happens by accident..but i hear these benefits being cut and i just cant imagine doing that.those benefits are our only ways to do the right thing by our heros...i wish tomorrows outcome could repair some of this mistake making...
Well the worst thing about losing my retirement benefits is losing the healthcare for my family. So now I have to get healthcare plans for my wife and son, but I can't get a plan for myself in Oregon because my back problem is a "pre-existing condition". I'm on the waiting list for the VA healthcare, but who knows when I'll get to the front of the list there...
I'm lucky to have my family and friends standing by me, and faith in God to see us through these tough times.
Hang in there Evan. You have a beautiful family to give you strength, and you're on the right track. You seem like a fine young man and I truly believe that we reep what we sew.
Well, I'm going to assume something, at least they are paying for college.
Yes, without the GI Bill we'd be in a lot worse shape. This way I get enough housing money from it so that I can focus completely on school and not have to work part-time as well, and my wife can work part-time to help cover the bills. We are currently staying with my parents because housing in expensive here, and it's hard to find a place that allows dogs.

Thanks! We all go through hard times, and I have no doubt we'll make it through this.
I talked to my academic advisor today and I should be done with my bachelor's degree by summer of 2014, so the end is in sight! I just want to get back to work (hopefully in a federal job with good benefits) as soon as I can.
I know the feeling on backs Evan. I was paying just under 500bucks a month for health ins. for years because nobody else would cover me because of my back. I've had a lower disc replaced, herniated disc trimmed, shots in my neck for disc pain, broken little side bones in my back, etc. It's been about 10 years now since my only back surgery, and I found new insurance better than I had for 82 bucks a month. It's going up to 110 next month, but still LOTS better than 500!
It is BS for sure you lost your retirement benefits and health coverage for your family. Sounds like you are doing all you can, and doing it the RIGHT way. I don't want to sound like a dad here, but I'm proud of you, doesn't seem like many people go about things the right way anymore.
