I can't get the right valve cover off of my 2000 X v10. i pulled the fender well to gain access to the bottom bolts but the cover is getting hung up on what i'm guessing is the rear cam cap. any tricks or tips? i am using new found self control not to massage anything with my mini sledge.
thanks
I know exactly what youre talking about......
I changed mine about 2 month ago and it took 2 man (1professional and me)
and nearly 2hours to change it.
RED VALVE COVERS
Its the bearing head of the camshaft wich blocked it, right, because you havent enough lift unless you have a 3" bodylift. We helped us with weeding out everything in his way including CClines to the rear.
Just be patient and calm of course.....maybe use a helping hand and a couple of sixpacks.
My passenger side valve cover is leaking a bit but I'm procrastinating on this one. The driver's side valve cover is a 0.9 hour job, but the passenger side valve cover is a 2.7 hour job. The procedure for the passenger side involves removing the alternator, heater hose, electrical plugs from the injectors and COPs, supporting the engine with a support bar, and disconnecting the passenger side engine mount bolts. This should allow the engine to be positioned so that the cover can be removed.
Thanks GermanMike. btw the red valve covers look really cool! Crazy001, i read all that in the haynes manual. i am scarred poopless about lowering the engine, e.g. the engine slipping off the jack and torqueing the tranny and causing more harm than good and totaling the vehicle as far as my budget is concerned. where would you find a engine support bar anyway?? If i could just get another 1/2" or so I would have it out. i'm trying to track down the horrid chattering sound that is coming from that area that has progressively gotten worse over time after a oil change and cleaning treatment. the engine consumed 2.5-3 quarts of oil on a 750 mile trip. I'm thinking valves(lash adjusters) and bad pcv. we will see. hopefully just a clogged oil passage. but with my luck probably not. if it wasn't for me having bad luck, i wouldn't have any luck at all.

You sound like you're doing this on a budget, so let me offer you a suggestion: Take that Haynes manual and use it for kindling, recycling, or place it near the commode emergency toilet paper if you like. But don't trust it with repair information. Many of us use ALLDATAdiy.com for our information, and this information comes directly from the OEM factory manuals. I'm not saying the Haynes manual is wrong, but there is better information available for about the same price. In fact, FTE has a great deal with Alldata found HERE.
I have to admit that removing an engine mount freaks me out a bit as well, but I really believe that you're least likely to damage your truck using the factory recommended method than trying different things yourself.
I don't have high hopes for this being an easy fix. I raised the valve cover as high as i could and looked inside. this is what i found: the cam mount (the thing that holds the cam in the front of the head) looks like it has a black oil baked on finish. the cam is red looking by the cam mount and the lobes have racing stripes. I will check out the alldata Crazy001. I'm very freaked out!!! Oh @#$%!!

I don't think removing the mount and a few other parts is going to add a ton of time and what is the reason you wanted to take it off in the first place?
