fuel pressure

First off I'll introduce myself my name is Ron I'm from the peach state I've been around diesel power my whole life just not IDI I bought this truck form ny company a couple of years ago,it is brutally reliable and tough as nails she has hauled way more than she was reted for more miles than I care to think about she now has 267,000 miles and still running strong. So heres the question about 3 years ago we put her in the ford dealership garage for some repairs and they're "diesel specialist" turned up the fuel TOO MUCH she would roll coal any time you were near tha floor board and gained power when you let off it so I turned it down 2 flats which cleaned up the smoke all of it and she is a little harder to start now but not by much, so do you think I should turn it back up maybe half a flat? Thanks in advance for you're help Oh by the way no turbo or way out mods just dual stacks and soup bowl gone. Thanks Again Ron

howdy and welcome to FTE

one thing you likely haven't considered is that adjusting the fuel screw also affects injection timing. and most dealerships don't have the timing meter so they just guess.

i would guess their deisel "specialist" knows plenty about powerstrokes and their computer controls, but not much about the IDI.

ideally, you have the fuel screw set to where you get just a haze when you really stomp on it. rolling coal is dumping unused fuel out the pipe, and clear exhaust means that if you give it more fuel, it can burn it. so turning it back up a little would likely help a little.

but what you really need is to get a ferret timing meter https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...41934586,d.cGE so you can check your timing and get it set up right.

you can call around to some local shops to see if anyone has one and can set your timing for you, but most of us who have tried have had no luck with that.

also, if your IP and injectors are more than about 100k miles old, they're getting tired and you'll benefit from new injectors and having the IP rebuilt.

The only time increasing max fuel by adjusting the leaf spring effects timing is when the rollers are extended out further than they were before the adjustment... Up until then, timing duration is unchanged... So unless somebody is driving around WOT all the time, timing is not going to be effected...

Its basically the fuel curve. The more you go the sooner it brings the fuel on.

Basically you should have a light haze from the exhaust at WOT through the entire RPM range if the IP is tuned right on.
