TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR (NEUTRAL SWITCH) REPLACEMENT HELP?
My 00 x limited 6.8 4x4 has been giving me a little resistance starting it in park for about the last year. usually i just wiggle the shift lever and bang it fires. Today, wife calls me, she parked the x went into the bank and found it in another parking spot. It rolled. She says shes putting it in park but its rolling and now it wont start unless its in neutral. I have heard its hard to replace the switch on the trans, and adjusting it. I was hoping it only fit one way. please advise!!
It only fits one way, and it isn't hard to install. Once you install it you're still going to have the same problem because it isn't what's wrong.
Look under the dash on the steering column near the floor. There are two Torx head bolts that hold the shift tube to the steering column. They are loose or missing. Tighten them (maybe even add a drop of Loctite) and both the starting and rolling problems will be fixed.
To add to what mark said...
Stick your head down to the brake pedal
then look up the column to see the screws.
Iirc you need to move shifter to first to get to
Them. Have someone hold the shifter while
you tighten them.
Yeah I put my head under and did tighten those torx bolts. Solved that issue of it parking it self where it sees fit. Reason Im replacing the neutral switch is because when I climbed under the Ex, there was a rubber o-ring hanging out of the white plastic part (circle) of the switch. I thought the o-ring is probably an interal o-ring.... Do I have to remove the shift linkage or just the 2 bolts?
You have to remove the nut that holds the lever to the shaft, then the two bolts.
Do this with the wheels blocked, the parking brake set, and the trans in neutral. When you install the new one there is a line on the housing that aligns with one on the center part when the trans is in neutral.
