I have a 78 F150 SCSB. It currently has the 300 I6 with efi manifolds to a 2 1/2" flowmaster super 40 that is dumped under the bed. I would like to get the exhaust out the back to get some drone out of the cab. Has anyone tried the tail pipe off a newer f150. Summit has a 2 1/2" dynomax tailpipe for a 83-86 f150 and i would think that is cheaper then going to an exhaust shop to have them make me a tailpipe. I already have an assortment of hangers and clamps on hand so I just need the tailpipe. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Terminating the exhaust under the bed induces more drone. See, the bed and its cavities, coupled with the ground, is deflecting and reflecting the sound waves (and likely inducing vibration) that you are experiencing. In essence, it is acting like an echo chamber.
I suggest simply terminating the exhaust beyond the body line so that the sound waves project outwards rather than being deflected and reflected.
I don't think ya need to get a whole exhaust system made up. Summit and Jeg's offer sections of mandrel bent tubing and straight sections for cheap. Determine the route and only order the pieces you need. Cut, clamp (or weld), and it's done.
Oh yes I am very aware of dumping the exhaust under the bed increases drone. Everything is new from the cylinder head to the turn down. I am simply seeing if the tail pipe from a new model f150 would work as all I would have to do is clamp it to the muffler and maybe add a hanger or two. This way I get the exhaust back behind the wheel and farther from the cab. I could put a 90 on the end of the muffler and run it out the side as a last resort. Was just looking for a full tail pipe.
