We first noticed that the truck would smoke when we were going downhill with the engine breaking to slow down the truck. People following would complain about the diesel smell and smoke. Today it started to idle rough and create a large cloud of diesel smoke. The truck does not use any oil I change it every 2500-3500 miles or so and it never goes down. The truck has 120,000 miles 7.3 liter turbo IDI 1994. Could this be a bad injector? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.
I'm going through the same thing with my 6.9, it sounds like. You mentioned people complain about the diesel smell, the smoke from mine smells pretty rich as well. I've been told it's most likely the injection pump and/or injectors for mine, but I'm hoping it's just the timing or an air leak around the injectors somewhere.
Just passing on what I've learned about my situation, yours could be entirely different. Good luck.

Zac
the odds are very high that your injectors are main cause for excessive white smoke and an extreme rich smell.
