This happened to my 2011 and now happened to my 2012.
The dealer would change my oil. Everything would be fine. After I go on a long haul....come home and pull the truck in the garage, the next morning oil would be on the ground the size of a baseball. I went under the truck and noticed it was coming from the oil filter. I would go underneath to try to tighten it and it is locked tight.
It would go away the next day and never return.
Has this happened with anyone else. This happened EXACTLY on my 2011. Now it has happened on my 2012. Identical situations.
I only kept my 2011 long enough for one oil change FYI.
This never happened with the first oil filter from the factory.
Hard to tell for sure. IF they filled the filter before installing it, it is possible that oil also filled the ring on top of the filter. When driven the oil splashed out and ran down the filter. Just a guess mind you.
That is really weird. 20,000 miles on mine now and I've done every oil change myself at 4,000 miles or less. I can't put the Motorcraft filter on very tight with my hand anymore, so I screw it on then use the filter wrench and give it 1/2 a turn. It comes off easy and I've never had a leak. I don't prefill the filter. I hope someone can figure this out, never heard of such a thing.
Yea Jim it sure is weird. I was thinking about doing my own oil changes. I do it to all my other vehicles. I just didn't want to upset the warranty lords.
I think it may not happen if I change the oil myself.
Last year on my 11 I thought it was just a thing and didn't say anything. Now it happened to my 12 and it has me scratching my head.
I just decided to post it here and see what these great guys say. This is a great place for info beyond what I know and if it's happening then these guys will know.
If its a rarity then atleast a thread is started.
Right now with the info I have I may just do my own oil changes and see if it ever does it again. I'll just document everything for warranty purposes.
Is it possible to improperly thread these filters on?
I’m always careful when installing but doesn’t appear to even have room for a screw up like that.
Wanted to pass this along for the forum. Took the truck by the dealer Friday. They went under neath it and saw the oil and yes it was coming from the filter.
They went to turn it and it turned a quarter of a turn.
The same guy that did the oil change said he had it on tight. Apparently it backed off some.
Now get this.......I have not heard this but the shop foreman said all of the 6.7's have this issue. After putting a filter on and running it a couple thousand miles, the filter will work its way loose. They have had alot of 6.7's leaking oil at the oil filter.
I dont know what to think about that. Either way the oil leak is stopped and I guess for the life of me owning the truck I will go underneath every now and then to make sure the filter is tight unless you guys have any other suggestions. Im all open. That will get to being a pain.
I only have 3 oil changes on the 6.7. I have the opposite problem where is requires a Wrench to get the filter off after 5 thousands miles.
Have you thought about changing the oil yourself. I have had problems in the past with the dealer doing oil changes. Sorry to say it sounds like your dealer is interested in getting the job done FAST, not doing a quality job.

Well I have considered it. I just don't want to put my warranty in jeopardy. The dealer will not work with u if u don't use them.
It can be tough but I prefer to do my own maint.
Tollie, Your warranty is not in jepordy if you don't use the dealer to do oil changes. Do it yourself, take it to Walmart, it won't matter, As long as you use oil that meets the specs and a filter that meets the spec and you do it with in the spec'd mileage limits.
And in the 75,000 miles and 10+ oil changes on my truck, I have not had the filter leak. Maybe I just turn it a little tighter than your dealer does.
Thanks for the reply Painted Horse! I will start doing it myself then. Heck if I took it to wal mart it would def fall apart. I havent spent a dollar with wal mart in ten years and I do not like wal mart at all.
Either way I will take care of the trucks oil changes and fuel filter changes myself. I just know the dealers around here like to throw you under the bus and not look after you unless you do all your regular service work through them. They really get offeneded if you never come there.
I always document everything so there shouldnt be a problem if I have a claim in the future.
Thanks.
Ive they forget to put a little oil on the seal. I can see this happening. Me personally fill my filter first, so i have plenty oil on seal.when im done installing it.i spray some brake cleaner from top of oil filter. Havent had a leak yet.
