Yep, I fill the clean filter with fresh oil and I put clean oil on the seal.
I'm now on my 7th or so oil filter and I've never had this issue but I probably put mine on a little tight.
I can usually remove mine by hand but it takes effort.
I've had to use a strap wrench once.

I've never yet had a filter loosen up on my 6.7. The 7.3's would shake them loose on a regular basis.

I buy my oil and filters from my dealer and always stop to visit for a few to let him see that I buy from them and still support his store. I think it makes for an amicable relationship. We get along pretty well.

o-ring

I have always pulled the o-ring off applied oil to entire o-ring. Then I tighen a little tigher then hand tight. Never ever had a drop make it past the o ring. It is a good idea to fill the filter.

A little off topic but if you can change it yourself you might be better off than bringing it to some dealers. Here is a scary situation I recently encountered.
I did my own first service and now that temps are dipping down a bit I thought I would quiz some local dealers on what weight they would put in engine,BTW I have Motorcraft 15w40 and filter installed currently.
Also after they told me what they would use I said a 2nd time it's a 6.7 diesel
dealers respond:
# 1 wants to put 5w20 in it 105.00
#2 10/40 126.95 (this is where I bought it)
#3 Straight 40 250.00
#4 15/40 100.00
I was wondering what they would have done if I actually brought it there,
I try to keep my vehicle out of repair facility's just for this reason. The 6.7 has to be one of the easiest vehicle to change the oil on.do it yourself and you wont get it under filled ,over filled, wrong viscosity, loose filter, and whatever.
sorry for the rant but really straight 40? 5w20
BTW thanks to all at FTE for all the info here that helps me keep my truck 110%

I wanted to update this for the benefit of the forum.....

I took it to the dealer a few weeks ago. They tightened it and it turned a quarter of a turn. It didnt leak. A week later after hauling a load to Raleigh and back I parked it and the next morning there was oil on the ground the size of a baseball. It has seeped out around the filter gasket. Took it in this morning AGAIN and they said they are just going to put another filter on it.

They pulled the oil filter and put a new one on. The tech said he tightened it as hard as he could.

If this happens again we are going to let the diesel tech call ford and see what they say. Right now the oil change guy has been doing the work.

I will keep the forum updated as this progresses.

I have done six oil changes on my 6.7 and never had a problem with oil leaking anywhere. I fill the filter, lube the rubber seal on the filter with new engine oil, then spin the filter on until it makes contact. I then turn the filter 3/4 of a turn and stop.

I am not sure why your oil change guy is tightening the oil filter as hard as he can. I suspect this could be part of your problem. They are not designed to be torqued that tight, though I am not sure if that deforms or hurts anything.

Sorry to hear.

I wounder if by over tighten it they are binding the o-ring and causing the leak.

I don't know I just have never had a problems with the filter leaking.

Thank you for the update.

You may be onto something here. I personally have changed a million oil filters and never heard of this happening. I always just get it hand tight and let her rip.

I dunno about all this. I will keep everyone in the loop.

Update...

I was watching some videos on youtube showing how to change the oil on a 6.7. I noticed that on both videos, the oil filter on each one is leaking. You can see the oil on it right before they go to pull them off. I swear this is a problem on these 6.7 trucks....
Below is the links to the youtube videos. Look and see the filters with oil all over them before they go to change them....the second video you have to look quick to see before oil gets all over it from loosening it...

I have done an awful lot of oil changing, as most of you have. I have never ever had an oil leak from a filter I installed.

Same song, clean oil on the o ring, spin it on and tighten it almost as tight as I can with one hand.

This thread is strange. How can somebody screw up an oil filter install?

I've changed the oil on all my vehicles for 50 years, never had one leak. I have overtightened them though and need dynamite to get them off!!

I'll disagree with you on this. I don't think there's an issue at all, most of us here have never had an issue with a leaky filter. The filters on the videos look like they were installed without the old oil completely draining first causing some seepage. When I take off my old filter, I let ALL the old oil completely drain before installing a new filter. I know it's not a big deal but I'm a little OCD and I really take my time. I also take off the oil fill cap before any draining so that it all drains out. I think your filter may have been installed wrong at some point causing some type of damage which is causing an improper seal. It will keep happening until you find where it was damaged, maybe the threads or the surface where it makes contact. It's not 6.7's, it's your truck.

Well my 2011 6.7 does it and my 2012 does it. Green ford services my 2011 and crescent ford services my 2012. The oil I see on the filters from the videos is before they loosen the filter. It's seepage just like mine are doing.

I have never have had an issue changing an oil filter ever. Next time I service my 6.7 I am going to do it myself. I'm not going to bear down and kill myself putting on the filter but will merely just hand tighten it like I do all other engines.
I want to see if the dealers are just over tightening them. Someone in this thread said that could be a possibility and it makes the most sense.
