I was surprised how much oil was still draining out of the truck in the second video when the tech put the drain plug and filter back on. Makes me never want to take my truck to one of those quick change places, not that I would have anyway.
I will add that I do not see these filters start to leak until I have done a highway run.
Around town driving I never saw oil on the ground in the garage. After a long trip....coming home and parking the truck for a week or two I will notice it.
At this point I am still thinking these dealers are over tightening it maybe. Then again on the 2011 I went underneath when it was leaking and turned the whole filter a quarter of a turn so it had backed off and come loose. The 2012 shes tight as can be. The dealer just keeps on replacing filters.
I was on youtube the other day and noticed this video. This guy went to do a review and in the opening of the video the truck rolls over the camera. You can clearly see he has a leaking oil filter as well. Im tellin ya guys its not uncommon.
The dealer changed my oil the other day and a week later there was a small puddle the size of a golf ball on the ground and the oil coming down the side of the filter.
Here is the video....
I'll post my .02 cents after owning this '11 for 9 months w/ 23k miles. I've done 3 oil changes now and used the trusty Baldwin B7379 oil filter (great filter on my '03 7.3L). Last oil change, when I removed the filter, noticed the male threaded portion on the engine block side was lose by a coupla threads. Didn't realize it was removable thread type on these 6.7L. Didn't have any leakage prior. Tightened up the threads to the block and proceeded with filter install. Didn't and haven't noticed a drop.
Maybe it's something to do with the threaded portion on the block side. Dunno. Thought I'd add.
Well, that is certainly interesting. I never thought about the oil filter being attached to a short pipe nipple. I guess it could work itself loose, or perhaps not been thread locked properly in the block in the first place. Though I've not had any problems I will certainly check this out on the next oil change.
Thanks for letting us know about what you found, it certainly is a service to us all!!!!!!!!!!!
I am sorry to be the only whistle blower here and I appreciate all of you guys and your thoughts. I just cant get over it....its a dang oil filter and I have never have seen an issue changing an oil filter. I think its an epidemic of the 6.7 and see evidence of it everywhere.
Either way I appreciate all of you guys help so far. This is a great forum!
tolliewolly, I don't think you're a whistle blower...rather I think you have a valid concern. With manufacturers of any kind, there are going to be anomalies with "new" anything, and sometimes still, old.
I too was leery of buying this first year production diesel engine but read what I read for the engineering that went into it and based my purchase on past experiences, like anything else in life.
I find my 6.7L to one of the best trucks I've ever owned. I think bringing it to this forum is warranted. Just wouldn't get too wrapped around the axle (no pun) or feel like chicken little on it. I understand it's a PITA to see the oil seepage but eventually there'll be a resolution...especially with all the knowledge that's here and around.
OAN, I'm gonna query with Ford about the looseness of the engine block threaded coupler that the oil filter screws on to. Maybe there's a Safety bulletin out on that of some sort.
